Ahrefs’ Digest #154: JavaScript SEO, the age of average, and more

Don't fall into this trap.

📰 News & updates

Links are no longer a top three ranking signal: Says Gary Illyes from the Google Search team. I’ll let you decide whether to believe Google.

Google “using clicks in rankings”: According to a former Googler. He also said that Google’s machine learning systems, BERT and MUM, are becoming more important than user data.

AMA with Google’s Gary Illyes: An answer not listed here is that Google sometimes treats subdirectories as different sites.

🔝 SEO

JavaScript SEO: JavaScript is not bad for SEO, and it’s not evil. It’s just different from what many SEOs are used to, and there’s a bit of a learning curve.

Impact of Sep 2023 Helpful Content update on travel blogs: Some travel bloggers have complained that the recent Google update is “accidentally penalizing” genuine websites. SEO Dan Taylor analyzed 103 travel websites to determine potential impact. His finding: Overall, more travel blogs benefitted from this Helpful Content update than saw a decline. 54% of travel blogs saw a MoM increase in estimated organic sessions overall, while 45% saw a decrease.

💻 Digital marketing

Why I made a 3D emoji: Glen Allsopp explains the reasoning behind why he made a 3D emoji for his website. Hint: branding.

The age of average: Art, interior design, architecture, cars, people, media, brands—they all look the same today. I’m a dancer myself. And I have to say that even dancers look the same these days. You can feel down about it, or you can look at it as an opportunity. If everyone looks the same, then it’s easier to stand out.

Confessions of a viral AI writer: “I can also imagine a world—and maybe we’re already in it—in which a new generation of readers begins using AI to produce the stories they want. If this type of literature satisfies readers, the question of whether it can match human-produced writing might well be judged irrelevant.”

106 cognitive biases and principles that affect your UX: To improve your product’s UX, you need to understand the biases and heuristics affecting decision-making.

Till next time ;)
Cheers,
