Ahrefs’ Digest #160: SEO salaries, content gap analysis, and more

Which one are you?

📰 News & updates

Discussion forum and profile page markup: Google announced support for profile page and discussion forum structured data for use in Google Search, including new reports in Search Console.

Crawl Rate Limiter Tool in Search Console: The crawl rate limiter tool in Search Console is being deprecated on Jan 8th, 2024.

Sports Illustrated caught: Sports Illustrated was discovered publishing AI-generated articles using AI-generated personas. When asked, they deleted all the content. SI has since ‘blamed’ the incident on a contractor.

🔝 SEO

Content gap analysis: Use our content gap analysis template to find and fill missing gaps in your content strategy.

SEO salary survey (2023): We ran a survey at BrightonSEO and asked 111 attendees what they earned. The median annual salary was $49,211 and the highest annual salary was $229,652.

Parasite SEO: Join Sam as he digs deep into how marketers strategically utilized a Google loophole to make tons of money via affiliate marketing.

Google’s index size revealed: Pandu Nayak, Google’s VP of Search, said that Google maintained a web index of “about 400 billion documents.” He also said that “for a time, index grew smaller than that.” As content becomes cheaper to produce (thanks to AI), indexing becomes more expensive. Google may be forced to index an increasingly smaller percentage of all web pages it finds.

Google’s algorithms uncovered: The recent leak of documents in an antitrust lawsuit against Google has given us an opportunity to explore Google’s algorithms. Natzir Turrado dives deep into the complex systems behind each Google search.

💻 Digital marketing

Content ideation: Ryan Law, our Director of Content Marketing, shows you eight different ways to generate article ideas.

Building a personal brand: Building a personal brand can sound icky. I like how Wes Kao reframes ‘personal branding’ into ‘personal credibility’. In that way, you can focus on showing people what you do, how you think, and how you can contribute—rather than trying to tack on ‘branding’ to your work.

Till next time ;)
Cheers,
