More than ever, internal mobility is a golden opportunity for companies to succeed in the face of ever-mounting skills gaps and external hiring challenges.

The problem is, many organizations are still not ready for this kind of internal movement. And it’s not just a lack of the right tools. 

If managers are unsupportive of direct reports’ growth because they don’t want to ‘lose’ them to other teams, and employees feel too nervous to pursue new career paths–there is a clear need for greater psychological safety and alignment within the organization.  

John Hinchliffe, Digital Learning Experience Manager at Emirates National Bank of Dubai, explains that most employees naturally have a large appetite to learn and grow, and managers in the most effective learning organizations see themselves as enablers of their teams, not owners. 

His advice for helping your workforce upskill or reskill while building out strong potential career paths is providing employees with opportunities to ‘taste’ a new role by applying their expertise elsewhere within the organization through internal gigs.
