But it’s also a risk when the time comes for a redesign.

If the website redesign process doesn’t include the extra steps required to preserve those rankings, the project is a high risk for negative ROI. You may launch a site with worse performance than the site you redesigned.

Which of your pages gets traffic from search? Which pages rank? Which pages have links? Which pages have the best messaging? Inventory them all …then make some decisions.

  1. See how many of your URLs are indexed by Google
  2. See which of your pages are getting traffic from search
  3. See which of your pages rank in search
  4. See which of your pages have been linked to by other sites
  5. Decide which of those pages to migrate, update or delete
  6. Set up 301 redirects for URLs that are moving
  7. Reach out to editors to update links when possible
  8. Check the robots.txt file
  9. Check the sitemap.xml file
  10. Make a nice 404 page
  11. Post-launch, use GA4 to check your search traffic and 404 page visits
