What Should I Do Next With My Newsletter? A Conversation With Claire Zulkey


For the past six years, Claire’s written a fantastic newsletter, Evil Witches, which is all about parenting and motherhood.

Evil Witches is doing well. She’s got more than 14,000 subscribers and is bringing in close to $40,000 a year in recurring revenue from the newsletter.

But in my conversations this year with Claire, she told me that she felt stuck with her newsletter and wasn’t sure what to do next. She said she felt like she needed a therapist — a newsletter therapist, that is — to talk through her options.

So that’s exactly what I tried to offer her. Here’s the first edition of what I hope will be a new feature on Inbox Collective: Ask a Newsletter Therapist, in which one newsletter operator and I talk through a big challenge for their newsletter, publish the full conversation for readers like you, and then you get to read about what happened next.

Claire had some big questions to answer: Should she change her sending cadence? Charge her paying subscribers more? Or maybe shut down the newsletter entirely?
