U.S. workers in a dizzying array of occupations are mobilizing. They’re forming new unions, going on strike or threatening strikes while negotiating new contracts, explains UMass Lowell labor historian Robert Forrant. Boeing machinists in Washington state and Oregon, and hotel workers employed by chains with properties scattered across the country, are holding significant strikes right now.

Why is this happening? According to Forrant, employment has become too “precarious” due to “economic disruption caused by the relocation of jobs, the impact of new technologies on work and the erosion of income stability.” Since those are all long-term trends, it’s reasonable to expect American labor movements to keep making a stand.
