A gentler way to wake up

Daylight saving time ends this coming Sunday, November 3. And while falling back means “gaining” an hour of sleep, any change to your sleep schedule can be disorienting. And the earlier sunset can cause energy-sapping fatigue.

A sunrise alarm clock, which uses gradual light and sound to gently rouse you awake—rather than jostling you from sleep with harsh noise alone—can help. This approach feels more natural and may be more effective at helping you feel less groggy when you wake up.

Newsletters editor Brittney Ho swears by hers: “There’s nothing more disheartening than leaving a cozy bed and shuffling around in a pitch-black room. Compared to the sucker punch that is my iPhone beeping in my ear in the dark, waking up with my sunrise alarm clock feels like a kind and gentle hug.”

One last thing: The best light therapy lamps

For some, a shift in the number of daylight hours can cause more serious emotional and physical changes than just the winter blahs. For those diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder, the darker months may feel like a physical exhaustion that will never end.

Light therapy lamps can help alleviate these symptoms. The one our experts recommend is a light with a reasonable price and a generous warranty—and all of the specs necessary to be considered therapeutically effective and safe.
