Love, Death & Dancing

Jack Garratt

Genre: Alternative, Electropop
Release Date: June 12, 2020
Top Tracks: Time, Old Enough, Mara, Anyone, Circles
Similar Artists: James Blake, Bon Iver

Every track on “Love, Death, and Dancing” is a journey with builds, breaks, and nuances.  The depth and complexity of Jack Garratt’s songwriting and production take you to another level of auditory sensation.  He can build up to epic horn proclamations with gospel-esque repetitions or hit you with bone-vibrating staccatos (like on “Anyone”).  So much effort and time went into this masterpiece, which is evident in the fact that Garratt took four years to release his sophomore follow-up album.  With this release, he cements himself as one of the most talented artists of the recent few years.  If possible, take the time to listen loudly, and preferably with surround sound.

Just Kids

Stevan

Cover 2
Spotify Logo
Apple Music Logo
Youtube Logo
Genre: Indie/Hip-Hop/Pop
Release Date: June 12, 2020
Top Tracks: On My Mind, Rock N Roll, Tripping, Dreamy
Similar Artists:  Raury, Childish Gambino

After listening to "Just Kids", it doesn't take much convincing to realize that Stevan has a bright future.  The 18 year old multi-instrumentalist, who comes from the coastal town of Wollongong, Australia, is as smooth as can be.  He transitions seamlessly from spacey pop notes to spoken word verses that flow uninterrupted, and rival that of hip-hop greats.  His influences are broad, citing everyone from Stevie Wonder and John Mayer, to Pharrell Williams and Kendrick Lamar, which is evident throughout this debut album.  Light and groovy guitar strumming meets funky piano playing, and it is all brought together by the unique songwriting of up-and-comer, Stevan.

GLUE

Boston Manor

Genre: Punk Rock
Release Date: May 1, 2020
Top Tracks: Everything Is Ordinary, Plasticine Dreams, Liquid
Similar Artists: Blink-182, The Wonder Years

The U.K. punk rock group, Boston Manor, show their versatility on their newly released album, “GLUE”.  They take on many personas, some of which include mellow introspection, angsty rebellion, and self-conscious lover.  All of these personas are portrayed through carefully crafted musical arrangements, which range from raspy yelling over distorted guitar to mellow serenading over clean guitar.  Much of the lyrics contain contradiction, centering on internal struggles to finding oneself, such as “I’m desperate to be heard but don’t have anything to say.”  It can be hard to distinguish between songs, as many of them are similar.  Take that as you wish.

The Rainwater LP

Citizen Cope

Genre: Folk/Rock
Release Date: February 8, 2010
Top Tracks: Healing Hands, I Couldn’t Explain Why, Jericho
Similar Artists:  G. Love, Dispatch

“The Rainwater LP” is a chill collection of tracks from Clarence Greenwood (aka Citizen Cope).  Many of the songs are catchy, but not in a radio hit kind of way.  You find yourself mumbling them hours (or even days) after hearing them, especially “I Couldn’t Explain Why”.  Not only are they catchy, but also versatile.  This album could be played around a campfire or blared through car speakers in the summer.  True to form though, Greenwood imposes continuous wisdom on his listeners, with lines like “the violence of a few has put the world in harms way”.

Bigger Love

John Legend

Genre: R&B/Soul
Release Date:  June 19, 2020
Top Tracks: Actions, Favorite Place, Conversations in the Dark
Similar Artists: Usher, Robin Thicke

John Legend is everywhere.  It's amazing that he has the time to do all that he does, and still focus enough to create an album of this quality.  As the first black man to win the big four Hollywood awards (aka EGOT - Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), he is a multi-talented force of the industry.  On his eighth studio album, "Bigger Love", he sings of "joy, hope, resistance, and the power of the human spirit."  Quite honestly, it is a great album to put on while sitting by the fire with a glass of wine.  I found myself listening to it all the way through three times straight, and wondering where the time had gone.
