Album Daily - Three. Two. One.

#27 - The Week of May 18 - 22

Howdy,

For any of you Spotify users, you know that there is no way to keep track of the songs added/removed from playlists that you follow, and that's just annoying.

In comes, the What's Spinning Newsletter to the rescue.  It updates you once a week on what has changed in a playlist you follow, like "Your Daily Mix" or "Morning Commute".  It was started by a friend of mine, Spencer, and it could be a huge help to a lot of you.

Be sure to check out What's Spinning, and tell them Album Daily sent you.

Last week's most clicked album was Petals for Armor by Hayley Williams.

Now, on to the good stuff.
- Henry

P.S. That was not an ad, I just think What's Spinning is sweet.

Reunions

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

Genre: Singer/Songwriter/Rock
Release Date: May 15, 2020
Top Tracks: What’ve I Done To Help, Easier, Be Afraid
Similar Artists:  Ryan Adams, Drive-By Truckers

Jason Isbell told Apple Music in a recent interview, “These songs and the way the record sounds reflects something that was my intention 15 or 12 years ago, but I just didn’t have the ability and the focus and the means to get there as a songwriter or a recording artist.”  Isbell has been open about his struggles with alcohol, and he is likely referring to this in that quote.  This album is a triumph, not just musically, but through Isbell’s sobriety, he is able to create to his potential.  As he says on “Easier”, “it gets easier but it never gets easy.”

BOY

RAC

Genre: Electronic/Indie
Release Date: May 8, 2020
Top Tracks: Next To You, Boomerang, Passion
Similar Artists: Tokyo Police Club, ODESZA

This album is just so smooth.  Honestly, I listened to it while I was working, and before I could really do a deep dive into the beats and lyrics, the album had ended.  And this happened twice, back to back!  The warm, calming, soundscapes are gorgeous, and they envelope you, transporting you away to a world created by RAC.  He tends to collaborate with vocalists, and let them sing over his production work.  This provides a sense of variability, and is a really nice touch.  This just might turn into my go to focus album moving forward.

Three. Two. One.

Lennon Stella

Genre: Pop
Release Date: April 24, 2020
Top Tracks: Euphoria, Cardigan, Company
Similar Artists: Travis Scott, Roddy Rich

It’s hard to be vulnerable in music. It takes a couple really unique traits, honesty and talent.  For someone to be truly vulnerable, they have to be brutally honest with themselves and the world, but also posses the talent to concisely mix their feelings with music.  This describes Lennon Stella perfectly, as she’s not trying to be somebody she’s not.  She tells of struggles in relationships and break ups, but is able to convey it through playful lines.  She says, “Some people want to switch it up, like just one love, could never be enough.  Some people watch golf on TV, and neither of those things make sense to me.”  What a brilliant way to explain a tough emotional battle.

Made In Muscle Shoals

The Revivalists

Genre: Alternative
Release Date: January 30, 2020
Top Tracks: You and I, Change
Similar Artists:  Moon Taxi, St. Paul & The Broken Bones

“Made in Muscle Shoals” is the latest installment from the New Orleans based roots rock group, The Revivalists.  At only seven songs, this 31 minute record packs a punch.  The only thing it is missing is more great tunes from this talented group.  As usual for them, they profess timeless wisdom, interlaced with funky jams and rocking riffs.  My favorite line is, “All the change inside your pocket, doesn’t change a thing.”  As a bonus, they include a stripped down version of their mega hit, “Wish I Knew You”, that shows another side of its construction.

Look Sharp!

Joe Jackson

Genre: Rock
Release Date:  April 1979
Top Tracks: Baby Stick Around, Is She Really Going Out With Him?, Throw It Away
Similar Artists: Elvis Costello, Talking Heads

Look Sharp! from Joe Jackson is full of late 70’s infectious dance tunes.  When this album comes on at a wedding, everyone can get up and dance to it, all the way from 12-year-old Christian to 94-year-old Grandma Dorothy.  The tempos are quick, the piano is fast, and the words are sung with urgency.  The mega hit, “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” is still played on radio stations today, as one of the most popular songs coming out of England in the late 70’s.
