Album Daily - El Dorado

#28 - The Week of May 25 - 29

Hi there,

Most of you know, I usually lead the newsletter with an album that dropped on Friday, so it is brand new.  Well, today you're not getting a new album.  Honestly, I just couldn't get into any of the new releases.

I could've caved and sent you The 1975 album, but I couldn't do that in good faith when it is 22 songs long and half of them sound like new age elevator music...

Make sure to check out the guest review on the throwback album today.  Ryan Sneddon from The Daily Thread picked an absolute winner.

Last week's most clicked album was BOY by RAC.  That album is đź”Ą

070 Shake

Youtube Logo
Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
Release Date: January 17, 2020
Top Tracks: Morrow, Daydreamin, Guilty Conscience, Terminal B
Similar Artists:  Don Toliver, Future Animals

Extremely unique for the genre, 070 Shake mixes influences from trap, hop-hop, and pop to create a cinematic hip-hop sound. She steers clear of traditional song layouts (verse, chorus, bridge), which keeps you engaged. Because of this, most of the tracks contain suprises. You think you have them figured out, and then a new instrument appears that you were not expecting. With the potential to be a commercial success with songs like "Guilty Conscience" and "Microdosing", this album has it all.

El Dorado

Marcus King

Genre: Rock
Release Date: January 17, 2020
Top Tracks: Wildflowers & Wine, The Well, Beautiful Stranger, No Pain
Similar Artists: Sturgill Simpson, Gary Clark Jr.

“El Dorado” from Marcus King is a great example of musicianship.  To be considered a great guitarist, King shows us that you don’t have to blow the audience’s face off with fiery riffs, but instead, weave together riffs of differing tempo and sound.  King uses empty space in his playing as well as anyone, which is shown throughout “El Dorado”.  Don’t get me wrong, “The Well” and “Say You Will” need to be blared loudly, but the softer side of King’s playing is his true strength.

Reserved for Gregory

Gregory Isaacs

Genre: Reggae
Release Date: October 4, 2018
Top Tracks: Unbelievable, Con the Don, Reservation
Similar Artists: Dennis Brown, Bob Marley

An icon of the 70’s and early 80’s, Gregory Isaacs just does not stop putting out music.  His most recent project, “Reserved for Gregory”, is a nice collection of classical reggae melodies and sounds.  While there is nothing earth shattering here, there is something to be said for consistency.  Isaacs has been putting out music for over 40 years, and an easy listening album like this one is a great addition to any summer playlist.

Copy That

Sara Evans

Genre: Country/Pop
Release Date: May 15, 2020
Top Tracks: If I Cant Have You, All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye, 6th Avenue Heartache, My Sharona
Similar Artists:  Faith Hill, Lady Antebellum

This is just a fun album.  Sara Evans is at the point in her career where she can do whatever she wants, and right now, she wants to do a cover album.  She puts a country/pop twist on these timeless classics, but this is a sing along album at its core.  She revisits Hank Williams, John Mayer, Fleetwood Mac, The Wallflowers, Bee Gees, and many more.  It’s an easy listen that fits in almost all situations.

The Dirty South

Drive-By Truckers

** This is a guest review by Ryan Sneddon, founder of The Daily Thread **

Genre:

Rock
Release Date:  August 24, 2004
Top Tracks: Lookout Mountain, The Buford Stick, Tornadoes and Goddamn Lonely Love
Similar Artists: Jason Isbell, Blackberry Smoke

"The Dirty South" (album, not place) is a gritty and honest picture of a particular kind of southern life.  It's the kind you see in the movies.  Old folks sit on the porch, Uncle Frank's got a still out back, a couple rusty cars on blocks are the only lawn ornaments.  The Drive-By Truckers explore death ("Lookout Mountain"), poverty and crime ("Puttin' People on the Moon, "The Buford Stick"), and loss ("Tornadoes and Goddamn Lonely Love").  Carve out an hour.  This is best listened to in order.
