Genre: Blues/Pop
Release Date: June 12, 2020
Top Tracks: Were You Watching, To Live, I’m Alive, Flame Twin
Similar Artists: Tony Bennett, Adele, John Legend

"Pick Me Up Off the Floor" is an experiment into poetic writing for Norah Jones. Instead of trying to write songs, she tried to write poems, then put music to them. What resulted is an album that contains some beautiful imagery depicting complex emotions (which is typical of poetry). Some of the stories are heart-wrenching, like on “Were You Watching”, which is a depiction of a distracted/disconnected partner.“ Were you watching, when our love was in the deepest danger? Were you watching, as we slowly turned into strangers?” she laments. Followed by repeated cries of “Darling, where were you?” This type of emotion is so hard to convey, but Jones makes the listener feel it to their core.

Quarantine Casanova

Chromeo

Genre: Electronic/Pop
Release Date: June 12, 2020
Top Tracks: Clorox Wipe, 6 Feet Away, Cabin Fever
Similar Artists:  Daft Punk, Hot Chip

People deal with stress in many types of ways, and some use humor to lighten the mood.  Chromeo falls into this category, and their new album, "Quarantine Casanova", is full of their typical sound alongside fun, quirky plays on the current way of life.  They set the tone early, as the first track starts with, "If I could reincarnate tonight, I would be your Clorox wipe.  'Cause I know in this climate, you might finally want me in your life."  This quickly tells us that this album is meant to make light of the current situation, and hopefully make us laugh.  They let everyone know what they have been up to, which is probably the same as many of us.  "I drank all the coffee, I feel like a zombie. I watched all my TV series back to back. And I talk to Siri but she won't talk back."

MUCK!

Swampmeat Family Band

Genre: Rock/Americana
Release Date: June 5, 2020
Top Tracks: Foggy Notion, I Hope I’m Wrong, If You Want Me To
Similar Artists: Neal Francis, The Avett Brothers

An eternal warning against slick, sweet talkers and flatterers, “MUCK!” is an admonition wrapped up in a bow.  Amidst lines like “Where do you think he learned to kiss? You better wipe those lips,” and “Baby his love won’t put a roof over your head” is a mix of surf rock guitar and Americana sing along style.  The honesty is evident in the lyrics, and the vocal performances live up to expectations.  Swampmeat Family Band, a relatively small group out of Birmingham, UK, delivers a formidable album that deserves to be heard.

Shake Your Money Maker

The Black Crowes

Genre: Rock
Release Date: Februaru 13, 1990
Top Tracks: Twice as Hard, Hard to Handle, She Talks to Angels
Similar Artists:  The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Page, Grateful Dead

You'll be hard pressed to find a debut album that packs a punch as much as "Shake Your Money Maker" by The Black Crowes.  Led by timeless jams like "Hard to Handle" and "She Talks to Angels", this album introduced the world to the phenomenal style of The Black Crowes.  Although this album was released in 1990, it has the sound of music before its time.  They were heavily influenced by 70's and 80's rock, particularly The Rolling Stones, which is evident in the rhythmic guitar and vocal nuances present throughout.

Taller

Jamie Cullum

Genre: Jazz/Pop
Release Date:  November 8, 2019
Top Tracks: You Can’t Hide Away From Love, Monster, The Man, Work of Art
Similar Artists: Jason Mraz, Michael Buble

Officially categorized by the industry as a jazz musician, Jamie Cullum appears to me as a pop artist with jazz influences.  His sound is closer to Jason Mraz than Miles Davis, so defining him as jazz seems like a stretch.  Nonetheless, his latest album, “Taller”, is a fun mix of triumph, life lessons, persistence.  In “Age of Anxiety”, Cullum describes using music to get lost in the moment, which is how he is able to deal with the overwhelming anxiety manifesting everywhere.  "I hope the band will make me sing along”, he says, because that is what makes him present.
