Album Daily - It is what it is

#30 - The Week of June 8 - 12

Black Lives Matter.  Period.  End of Story.

I don't feel like I have a special position to expand on the topic beyond what I said above, and that's because I'm here to listen, understand, and help out however I can.  Things like this go a long way, and that is what I hope we all can strive to do.

This week, I'm highlighting some of the black voices in music.  And along with some of my friends, explore the extremely relevant topics many of them express in their music.  Be sure to check out the guest reviews by Andre and EJ, as they picked some great albums.

Now, turn your speakers up!

Genre:
 Hip-Hop/Rap
Release Date: May 21, 2020
Top Tracks: TOP FLOOR, FAR, COOLER THAN A BITCH
Similar Artists: Lil Baby, Offset

Thankfully for Gunna fans, the MC we get in "WUNNA" isn't all that different from the man who taught us the meaning of drip. Across beats from a veritable wish list of can't-miss producers including Wheezy, Turbo The Great, and Tay Keith, Gunna raps in effortless non sequitur about clothing, jewelry, and women. He's joined by frequent collaborators Lil Baby, Young Thug, Travis Scott, and Roddy Richh. Ricch guests on "COOLER THAN A BITCH", a song dedicated to anyone mistakenly believing that they're operating on the same plane as him. Across 18 tracks, "WUNNA" is everything fans could have wanted from an MC who has dedicated his career to establishing himself as a trendsetter. In fact, the only place the drip is missing, is in the title.

Genre:

Hip-Hop/R&B
Release Date: May 27, 2020
Top Tracks: LOYAL, SAVAGE ANTHEM, TRAUMA
Similar Artists:  Bryson Tiller, Roy Woods

PARTYNEXTDOOR's album 'PARTYMOBILE' is a tape that many fans have waited a long time for, including myself.  The album gives you 'chill vibes' that you can listen to when you're at relaxing at home.  The beat, rhythm and flow to all the songs put you at ease, while some will hit you in your feelings.  My personal favorite song from the album is 'SAVAGE ANTHEM' which is about heartbreak, and going back to how you were before a relationship.  You can definitely listen to every song as he explains being the life of a party- along with it having it's ups and downs.

Run The Jewels

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
Release Date: June 3, 2020
Top Tracks: walking in the snow, JU$T, out of sight
Similar Artists: Vince Staples, Killer Mike, El-P

In a timely album, Run The Jewels is able to capture the pulse of the nation. I cannot pretend to say it as well as them, so I'll let the lyrics speak for themselves. From "walking in the snow":

"They promise education, but really they give you tests and scores
And they predictin’ prison population by who scoring the lowest
And usually the lowest scores the poorest and they look like me
And every day on evening news they feed you fear for free
And you so numb you watch the cops choke out a man like me
And ’til my voice goes from a shriek to whisper, “I can’t breathe”
And you sit there in the house on couch and watch it on TV
The most you give’s a Twitter rant and call it a tragedy
But truly the travesty, you’ve been robbed of your empathy"

It Is What It Is

Thundercat

Genre: R&B/Soul/Funk
Release Date: April 3, 2020
Top Tracks: Black Qualls, Interstellar Love, King of the Hill
Similar Artists:  Flying Lotus, Anderson .Paak, Louis Cole

With influences from jazz, funk, and hip-hop, Thundercat (a.k.a. Stephen Lee Bruner) is able to create an album with an eclectic sound that pushes the boundaries of musical creativity.  It is summed up by the lines, "The box you tried to throw me in don’t fit me no more. Creative spirit talkin, creative spirit walkin".  Traditionally, Thundercat has been known as a bassist/producer, but in the last couple years, he has transformed into a highly respected voice in modern music.  With this in mind, this album has some of the best bass lines you will hear, which is Thundercat sticking to his roots.

To Pimp a Butterfly

Kendrick Lamar

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
Release Date:  March 15, 2015
Top Tracks: The Blacker the Berry, i, King Kunta, u
Similar Artists: Childish Gambino, Isaiah Rashad, Schoolboy Q

Upon its release in 2015, Kendrick Lamar's "To Pimp a Butterfly" was met with widespread critical acclaim, and was quickly adopted as a portrait of racism, inequality, institutionalization, and mistreatment.  Listening to it today, it seems to strike a chord in 2020 just as much as in 2015.  In the final track, "Mortal Man", Lamar reads a story about a caterpillar and butterfly that poetically defines institutionalization in extremely understandable terms.  In the end, it is impossible to not hear the emotion and passion in Lamar's voice, and there is so much we can learn from his timely commentary to this day.
