Album Daily - Wild world

#29 - The Week of June 1 - 5

Hi there,

This week I'll make up for the lack of newly released picks from last week.  There were a few good options this time around, including the new album from Kygo (which I assume many of you will listen to anyway, which is why I didn't select it).

I never thought I would ever hear myself say this, but I've been into the newly released classical music (see Sean Shibe's album below).  It's so nice to throw on while I work because it keeps me energized, but it isn't intrusive.  There's just a level of complexity and depth that is hard to find in other genres.

Last week's most clicked album was Modus Vivendi by 070 Shake.  Definitely one of the best hip-hop albums of the year so far.

Now, turn your speakers up!

Wild World

Genre: Country
Release Date: May 29, 2020
Top Tracks: Southpaw, Janie Blu, Hey Old Lover, Wild World
Similar Artists:  Eric Church, Tyler Farr

Kip Moore’s fourth studio album, “Wild World” is a story of coming to terms with regret.  Moore admits suppressing regretful emotions his entire career, and finally allowing himself to open up about them.  It’s easy to hear his sincerity through his signature raspy voice and emotional performances.  It’s nice to hear a mainstream country artist diverge from the radio formula so many of them fall into.  Tracks like “Southpaw” and “Janie Blu” are unique and appealing, and separate Moore from the pack.

3.0

Big Data

Album Cover 2

Genre: Alternative/Electronic
Release Date: July 26, 2019
Top Tracks: Slay, Put Me To Work, Give Me Life, Live Forever
Similar Artists: RAC, Awolnation, Zedd

A nice mix of electronic and electropop, "3.0" from Big Data (aka Alan Wilkis) is a consistent treat.  Throughout the album, there really are no weak spots.  Everything flows well, between catchy pop influenced tracks (“Candy”) to heavier electronic work (“Give Me Life”).  Wilkis seems to have found the sweet spot between pop and electronic that doesn’t alienate either genre’s target listeners.  He deserves kudos for that, as it is a tall feat to accomplish.

Hallelujah Anyhow

Hiss Golden Messenger

Genre: Americana/Folk
Release Date: September 22, 2017
Top Tracks: Jaw, I Am the Song
Similar Artists: Dawes, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes

Americana style exudes from Hiss Golden Messenger’s ninth album.  At times they sound like Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (“Jaw”), but also like Billy Idol (“I Am The Song”).  Those sounds could not be more different, so it is impressive to see the versatility.  The harmonicas, brass instruments, and horns add great depth to the album, and help portray its message of positivity and light.

J.S. Bach: Lute Works (Arr. for Guitar)

Sean Shibe

Genre: Classical
Release Date: May 22, 2020
Top Tracks: Praeludio, Allegro
Similar Artists:  Andy McKee, Bach

I’m not going to pretend to know much about classical music, so I won’t throw out facts here.  But what I do know is how calming this Sean Shibe’s Bach rendition is.  Throughout the listen, many of the melodies sound familiar.  Nobody knows if this music was originally intended to be played on the guitar, which accentuates the originality of Shibe's guitar rendition.

The Second

Steppenwolf

Genre: Rock/Blues
Release Date:  January 1, 1968
Top Tracks: Disappointment Number (Unknown), Faster Than the Speed of Light, Magic Carpet Ride
Similar Artists: Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane

Many of us know Steppenwolf from their motorcycle anthem “Born To Be Wild”, but on their album “The Second”, Steppenwolf clearly shows their bluesy roots.  They steer clear of the late 60’s rocker sound on much of the tracks, and accentuate blues guitar, piano, and harmonica.  This style of blues is approachable, and refined.  It focuses on swinging, upbeat melodies, and is easy to jive with.  However, the most popular song from this album is “Magic Carpet Ride”.  It has more of the classic rock feel, ditching much of the bluesy tones.
