Imploding the Mirage

Genre: Rock
Release Date: August 21, 2020
Top Tracks: Caution, My Own Soul's Warning, Blowback
Similar Artists: Snow Patrol, Keane, Coldplay

The biggest band to come from Nevada, The Killers, release their sixth studio album, Imploding the Mirage. The result is a polished set of tracks that emphasize the talents of the group, all while deviating from the formula enough to keep listeners intrigued. Their true strength, if I had to choose one, is storytelling from the third person perspective. Initially, this talent was seen by the masses on "Mr. Brightside", and it is continued on Imploding the Mirage through "Blowback" and "Caution". Through their descriptive, step-by-step monologues pull you in, and somehow, get you invested in the life of the protagonist. Apart from the third person stories, this album contains first person accounts from the group that will be gracing the airwaves for years to come.

I Slept On The Floor

Another Sky

Genre: Alternative/Post-Rock
Release Date: August 7, 2020
Top Tracks: Fell In Love With The City, Avalanche, Tree
Similar Artists:  Mutemath, Imogen, Heap, Fiona Apple

There is no missing the main differentiating factor in Another Sky’s music, and that is Catrin Vincent’s voice. It’s mysterious, idiosyncratic, and evolves throughout the record. She spends most of her time in deep notes, but when she transitions to falsetto (which happens quite frequently), it’s as unexpected as a hurricane in Montana. The beauty of this album is really the ease and precision in which the band intermingles post-rock sounds with Vincent’s voice. It is a seemingly perfect backdrop for her. It’s hard to produce a comparison for them, as there are many different evolutions of their sound. For example, “I Slept On The Floor” could be placed on an Imogen Heap record. However, “Life Was Coming In Through The Blinds” sounds like a futuristic mix of Bon Iver and James Blake.

All The Time

Jesse Lanza

Genre: Dance/Electropop
Release Date: July 7, 2020
Top Tracks:  Baby Love, Lick In Heaven, Anyone Around
Similar Artists: Caribou, Blood Orange

Jessy Lanza is a musician and songwriter from Hamilton, Ontario. Her latest release, All the Time, is a polished mix of dance and electropop, with enough vocal work to truly catch on. Although this genre is usually pretty predictable in terms of sounds, this album is versatile in its sounds and vibes.  It could be a wonderful focus album due to its reserved vocals pensive instrumentation. On the other hand, a track like “Lick in Heaven” can get you up and dancing, or in Lanza’s words, “spinning, can’t stop spinning”.  Truly, she does so much spinning in that song, I don’t know how she isn’t dizzy.  What sets this album apart, however, is the song, “Baby Love”.  Her raw emotion portrayed through that perfectly executed falsetto shows how sincerely she is “giving up all my love, giving it all to you”.

Lemonade

G. Love

Genre: Rock/Funk
Release Date: January 1, 2006
Top Tracks: Ride, Ain’t That Right, Banger, Yeah Yeah
Similar Artists:  ALO, Slightly Stoopid, Jack Johnson

Honestly, this album got me through last week. It’s one that you can put on repeat all day, and never get bored. The good vibes just emanate throughout, and cultivate a good mood. The mix of acoustic guitar, the raspy vocals, and even funky harmonica create a sound that makes you feel like you can take on the world. This album really feels like a collaborative party, as G.Love enlists the help of Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Blackalicious, and many more. The track with Jack Johnson is especially uplifting, starting with, “I woke up this morning, rainbow filled the sky. That was God telling me everything’s gonna be okay.” What sets Lemonade apart, however, is the rapping sections that lay down flows over piano percussion and guitar, like on “Banger”.

Now I Rise

Dre Island

Genre: Reggae/Dancehall
Release Date:  July 24, 2020
Top Tracks: More Love, Days of Stone, Never Run Dry, I Rise
Similar Artists: Jah 9, Jesse Royal, Bob Marley

Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, Andre Johnson (aka Dre Island) uses his music with one purpose in mind: betterment of humanity. His long awaited debut album (and when I say long, I mean almost a decade long), is the perfect mix of dancehall and reggae coupled with social consciousness at the forefront. On "Still Remain", Johnson is honest about the struggles he sees; not to wallow, but instead to bring awareness. "Creating less jobs, more complications. More homeless youths in a bus station. Good days short, and bad days long", he sings, with the culminating truth of, "We will prevail". He is a uniter, not a divider. His knows, however, that prevailing does not happen overnight. He preaches persistence on "Never Run Dry", saying "All the things dem a do and all the things dem a try. Years dem a fight but still Rasta survive."
