Genre: Ambient
Release Date: September 4, 2020
Top Tracks: MMXX- V, MMXX - IX
Similar Artists: Brian Eno, Cloudchord, Jay Son

MMXX, the new release by Diplo, is ambient focus music magic. After the album ended on my first listen, there was at least a 5 minute period of silence before I realized something was different in my auditory environment - that’s how expertly crafted this ambient album is. Unlike Diplo’s traditional work, there are minimal vocals, it mainly contains soundscapes that could fit into any cinema blockbuster. When talking about MMXX, Diplo said, “It’s about being here in the moment this year.” It’s meant to augment your current experience, not divert you from it. Well, it’s Monday, so throw on some headphones, click play on this album, and you’ll be whisked away to a world of productive bliss.

American Head

The Flaming Lips

Cover 2

Genre:  Alternative
Release Date: September 11, 2020
Top Tracks: God and the Policeman, Flowers of Neptune 6, Will You Return/When You Come Down
Similar Artists:  My Morning Jacket, Wilco

American Head is a look into loss, drugs, and the dark depths that can arise from either of them. As a child, frontman Wayne Coyne would wait up all night for his brother to come home, fearing that he could lose him to recklessness at any moment. Much of this album captures that feeling, the fear that arises from love. You can hear it right away, in the title track “Will You Return/When You Come Down”. Later, on “Mother I’ve Taken LSD”, they chronicle someone whose life outlook was altered for the worse after taking drugs, and having to explain that to their mother. Kacey Musgraves makes an appearance on “God and the Policeman” alongside some beautiful bells, highlighting what they see as the similarities between the two.

Zeros

Declan McKenna

Genre: Alternative
Release Date: September 4, 2020
Top Tracks:  Be an Astronaut, Beautiful Faces, The Key to Life on Earth
Similar Artists: Catfish and the Bottlemen, Hippo Campus

This album has been gaining some traction over the last week, competing with The Rolling Stones re-release for top selling album - and for good measure. At only 10 songs, Declan McKenna ensured that every single track packed a punch, and brought something unique to the table. Take the Beatles inspired, “Be an Astronaut”, for an example. This track sounds like it could’ve been pulled right off of “Revolver” next to “Eleanor Rigby” and dropped in McKenna’s discography last week. Or “Beautiful Faces”, a story of the allure of the party life, that has a gorgeous poetic rhythm.

Music Is My Savior

Mims

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap
Release Date: March 27, 2007
Top Tracks: This Is Why I'm Hot, Like This, Where I Belong
Similar Artists:  50 Cent, Yung Joc

This throwback from Mims, Music Is My Savior, is a great album from the rapper who had a short, but impactful career. This album, specifically, is shockingly consistent, even though is=t is anchored by the two mega-hits "This Is Why I'm Hot" and "Like This". Listening back through this album, I was amazed at how similar Mims sounds to Roc Nation billionaire, Jay-Z. Listen closely to "Girlfriends Fav MC", and hear the similarities in tone, tempo, and lyrical cadence. In the end, Mims only released two full length albums, and has refrained from releasing any projects since. He was able to ride the high of this ultra-popular album, and still have an effective career, nonetheless.

A ROCK

HARDY

Genre: Country
Release Date:  September 4, 2020
Top Tracks: BOOTS, WHERE YA AT, BOYFRIEND, GIVE HEAVEN SOME HELL
Similar Artists: Morgan Wallen, Riley Green, Luke Combs

A prolific songwriter, Michael Hardy, who goes by the stage name HARDY, has penned hits for Blake Shelton, Florida Georgia Line, Morgan Wallen, and others. His debut album release, A ROCK, shows that he is much more than just a songwriter. He is a performer with an edge that can separate him from the bro-country revolution of late. He embraces a more rock and roll inspired style, and teeters on the line of arena rock with songs like " BOOTS" and "WHERE YA AT". In all, this album is a solid debut that should make any fans excited for the career of this talented music multi-talent.
