The Forty-Five - Get to know our September cover star

View this email in your browser
Hello,

With news just in that TikTok will be banned from US app stores from Sunday, it's interesting to see how this will affect the charts. A while back, Sophie Wilson spoke to some artists and industry people about how the app has defined what a viral hit looks like – and what its absence might mean for fledgling musicians.

Next week, we prepare to celebrate the album in its purest form with the announcement of the 2020 Mercury Prize. Who's your money on this year?

Until then, here's who we've been chatting to this week
BANKS STATEMENT
For our September Cover Story, Natty Kasambala meets Ms Banks – one of Britain's most exciting new talents – to talk female empowerment, sexual liberation and why she's got south London to thank for it all.
OUT TODAY
Fenne Lily's new record 'Breach' is out today. Gemma Samways had a chat with her about getting nude with Phoebe Bridgers, mistaking Steve Albini for the tea boy and why music doesn't always need to be so serious.
FIVE YEARS OF 'EMOTION'
Eve Barlow catches up with Carly Rae Jepsen to reflect on five years of her album 'Emotion' – one of the purest pop records of the last decade.
TEENAGE KICKS
Kaash Paige is blowing up around the world. The 19-year-old Def Jam signee can already boast millions of streams and a debut album of psychedelic lo-fi R&B. Kyann-Siann Williams meets the megastar in the making.
RIRI FOR QUEEN?
As Barbadians shun their colonial past and give Queen Liz the boot, Rihanna fans have been quick to identify an opening for a new Head of State – and only one person to fill it. For this week's Subtweets, Jenessa Williams imagines a world where RiRi takes the throne
