Album Daily - Abracadabra

Album Daily
#45 - The Week of September 21 - 25

Great collection of albums this week.  I don't normally send much classical music, but the album by Chad Lawson deserved a highlight.  If you need some calm in your life, let that bring it to you.

Now, turn your speakers up.

THE SPEED OF NOW Part 1

Keith Urban

Genre: Country/Pop
Release Date: September 18, 2020
Top Tracks: Out the Cage, Say Something, God Whispered Your Name
Similar Artists: Jake Owen, Tim McGraw

Keith Urban undoubtedly had a blast making THE SPEED OF NOW Part 1. Listen to him sing passionately on “Out the Cage” or “One Too Many”, it just sounds like he is having so much fun - leaning in to who he is as an artist and a person. Like usual (for Urban), this album is categorized as country, but could just as easily be labeled as pop. With an album like this, Urban could once again win the coveted Entertainer of the Year award. He knows how get people moving, dancing, and singing along to his infectious music, exactly the ideals that award embodies. I’m not saying he is going to win, but it would be negligent to not include him in the conversation.

You Finally Knew

Chad Lawson

Genre:  Classical
Release Date: September 11, 2020
Top Tracks: Waltz in B Minor, Rain, Prelude in D Major
Similar Artists:  Rubin Kodheli, Chopin

You Finally Knew is an undeniably calming work of art. I’d love to see a trend chart of heart rate over time while listening to this album, as there is no doubt it takes a plummet. Lawson navigates effortlessly through classical renditions of ballads and waltzes, while adding some contemporary flavor on top. It’s hard to create a classical album that can be received and recommended in the mainstream, but this release nailed it.

RE-ANIMATOR

Everything Everything

Genre: Alternative
Release Date: September 11, 2020
Top Tracks:  Lost Powers, Planets, Violent Song
Similar Artists: Another Sky, Bombay Bicycle Club

Everything Everything, the indie rock band from Manchester, returns with their fifth studio album, RE-ANIMATOR. True to their style, this album contains songs whose complexity rivals some of the most intricate production ever created. Similar to a recent Album Daily recommended album from Another Sky, the lead singer Jonathan Higgs's voice is tough to describe, as he stays primarily in a drippy falsetto. On the first track, "Lost Powers", the well-played background strings is gorgeous. Later, on "Planets", the melody of the synths perfectly mirror the tone and melody of Higgs's voice, and it makes for a mesmerizing combination.

On The Border

Eagles

Genre: Rock/Pop
Release Date: March 22, 1974
Top Tracks:  Midnight Flyer, Ol 55, Already Gone
Similar Artists:  Eric Clapton, The Doobie Brothers

On the third album from one of the most successful rock groups of the 1970’s, the Eagles lean into their key differentiator - smooth, timely, and beautiful vocal harmonies. No one can execute harmonies better than this group, and that is proven with six number-one albums in their discography. On The Border contains their first number-one single, “The Best of My Love”, a soothing track with backing slide guitar. They show their versatility on “Midnight Flyer”, gracefully melding their vocals with a fingerpicked banjo. It easily could have been picked as part of the soundtrack to the movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” as a hit song for the fictional Soggy Bottom Boys band.

Abracadabra

Jerry Paper

Genre: Alternative/Electronic
Release Date:  May 15, 2020
Top Tracks: Quicksand, Cholla
Similar Artists: Mild High Club, HOMESHAKE

Jerry Paper creates pensive, relaxed music. Abracadabra is a great album to throw on to relax, unwind, and chill. He mixes lo-fi production with groovy, jazz/funk influences to create subdued, yet catchy music. He sounds like an artist that other artists want to work with, due to his creative tendencies and production quality. Make sure you don’t miss the gripping bass line on “Cholla”.
