the one email rule you should never break

Pop quiz: do you know the one rule of email that you should never ever break no matter what?

Well it's a trick question because there really aren't rules for email.

We're all testing, trying new things, experimenting, and learning from each other and (hopefully) from our subscribers.

Now that you know there are no rules, are you kind of freaking out or filled with a deep sense of calm?

I'm a total Type A, oldest child, Leo so not knowing the rules makes me uneasy. Tell me exactly what to do (and preferrably how to do it that will make you happy) and I'll get it done. I like rules.

But one thing that excites me about email, specifically, is the lack of rules. All you have to do is... listen to your subscribers.

It's the simplest and hardest "rule" to follow.

And most people get it wrong.

Especially in a year when we're all just trying to stay afloat.

When we're scared we fall back on the easy route. We copy what other people are doing (even if we know it doesn't work for us). We send more promos and do less connecting. We... just plain don't send emails.

Sound familiar?

And it's not just email that suffers. It's the entire business.

I can sit here and pretend to have all of the answers for you on that. I can. I'd just be wrong.

I don't have the answers. But I do have a whole bunch of experience and a good friend called NickD and we're launching a podcast to help us all get a little bit closer to the answers.

Since these are Unprescedented Times that are full of Uncertainty... we're searching for clarity.

You too?

If you'd love to cling to rules like me (or maybe you prefer to walk right past the rules like Nick) we'd love your help.

Now here's my ask:

1) Go read more about our show
2) Fill out our survey
3) Share at least one of the above with a friend or twelve

Does the business world need another podcast? No.

But does the business world need a step closer to some sense of certainty? Absolutely, yes.

We hope you'll join us for the ride.
