Five Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 119th edition of Find That Pod.

This week I posted the following question on twitter...

and you beautiful people DID NOT DISAPPOINT with your answers. Some truly, horrifically bad and hilarious ideas in there. Feel free to keep contributing to that thread... let's get all the terrible podcast ideas out there in the hopes that they never get made?

Here are this week's podcast recommendations:

The Curious Professor

Curiosity is the name of the game with this easily digestible and highly varied podcast in which host Dr. Karen Bryson, a.k.a, Dr. B., a bestselling author, brings her infectious brand of knowledge-seeking to a wide variety of topics through expert interviews. And when I mean wide variety, I'm not exaggerating. Although the podcast appears to have only started sometime this past January, the show has thrown its curious gaze onto topics such as thorium (fuel of the future apparently), semi-truck driving, conservation movements, and of-course, bomb hunting.

The real differentiator with this great bite-sized show is that it doesn't attempt to take listeners into well-trodden topics. No, it takes curiosity to places not often scrutinized in the podcasting world, which is frankly a breath of fresh air. So if you fancy yourself some sort of a curious mind, give this show a listen, I'm glad it came across my radar.

Two Hot Takes

Like many of you, I've been a long-time Redditor. Yes, that website has its detractors, but if you subscribe to just the right set of subreddits, a lot of awesome time wasting can occur! And sometimes, reddit can be a truly clever and awesome source of humour. I guess that's what the host of Two Hot Takes saw as well as each week it delves into some of the juiciest, most ridiculous and hilarious stories straight from reddit. Pretty great show for anyone looking to infuse their regular listening schedule with some witty banter amidst of a sea of Internet idiots posting their stories.

Something Scary

Sometimes a good old spooky story is just what my brain likes to relax to. I know, I'm weird... but if you share my weirdness and fondness for finding some bone-chilling stories told to you in audio format, you won't go front with the Something Scary podcast. Now at over 200 episodes strong, there's plenty of back-catalog for you to dig into if you do wind up enjoying this show.

Working

Work, and the nature of it is in, what I would call, some sort of massive convulsion. I suppose a once-in-a-hundred-year pandemic will do that. Most of us have to work to subsist, and yet I find the stories of HOW people work and what they experience in their careers to be the stuff of utter fascination that tickles my brain. That's why this podcast from Slate, which is all about interviews with a wide variety of creators and creative people about how they write, compose, paint, record, and ultimately, work, is right up my alley.

Gates McFadden Investigates

Yes, I'm a Trekkie. I think it's kinda cool to admit that now right? Ah who cares, I loves me some Star Trek in practically any shape or form. But for my taking, and maybe because it's how I learned half my English and lessons about morality, TNG (The Next Generation for you non Trekkies) will always remain my favourite Star Trek series. And as fans know, a huge part of that show was Gates McFadden, who played the wonderful Dr. Beverly Crusher.

Now, McFadden has taken to the digital airwaves with her very own podcast, and man-oh-man, not only has she gotten most of the TNG gang back together for personal and fascinating one-on-one interviews, but she's actually a pretty incredible interviewer! I can't wait to see where she takes her podcast next... I for one will remain tuned in, cause you know, Star Trek is awesome and so is Gates McFadden. /fanboycrushout.
