Five Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 122nd edition of Find That Pod.

As always, welcome new subscribers, glad to have you here.

This week I asked a very important question on twitter. I'd love to hear more of your answers. Now, onto this week's recommended podcasts.

Complicit, A True Mystery Podcast

Sometimes true crime stories are first a tantalizing true mystery. And this is such a story. It's the story of a Florida woman, named Lauren Dumolo who has been missing for over a year. Hosted by hosts and investigators Caitlin Boddy and Hilary Wadsworth, this podcast aims to shed light on a case whose lack of resolution continues to haunt Lauren's family and friends. With top notch storytelling, narration and interviews of many people in Lauren's life, it's a truly fascinating look into an active missing persons case that will have you wondering what could have possibly happened.

If you're a true crime and mystery podcast fanatic, like I know a great deal many of you are, give this show a listen. Just be warned, there's plenty of unexpected twists and turns in this story for you to encounter.

COMEDY

Timesuck with Dan Cummins

Where do I even start with this goddamned podcast. I curse it, because I have lost so much podcast listening time to this show over the last few months, I'm embarrassed to admit to it. Timesuck is probably my favourite podcast discovery of 2021 thus far. And that's saying a lot given how many shows I listen to. So what is Timesuck and who the hell is Dan Cummins?

Dan is a talented stand-up comedian, but dare I say, perhaps even more talented podcaster. Combining a mastery of exactly the type of comedy that tickles my funny-bone with incredibly fascinating historical topics, Timesuck is a show that explores a huge variety of interesting and historical narratives. It's precisely that combination of well-researched topics and Dan's particular brand of dark humour and delivery that has had me howling with laughter, often with tears streaming down my face with nearly every episode.

Thankfully, if you like this show as much as I do, you have a deep archive to dig through, which will undoubtedly steal countless hours of your attention.  Topics of coverage include serial killers, the Lizard Illuminati, Aliens, historical figures, historical events, cults cults cults, and yes, General Butt Naked (seriously.) The running gags are also great, especially the constant mispronunciation, and the one about casting constant doubt about whether Dan's father is a serial killer? Is he? I don't know, who can be certain of anything?

And above all that other high praise, Dan seems like a really good dude. He's analytical, smart and incredibly funny, but also has a penchant for philanthropic causes through his Bag Magic productions podcasting mini-empire. If there is one podcast you take away from all my recommendations so far this year, make it this one, you can thank me later.

Hail Lucefina. Hail Nimrod. Praise Bojangles. 3 out 5 stars. Wouldn't change a thing. (you'll get the joke after you become a fan of this show).

KIDS & FAMILY

The Genius Generation

Did you know that the trampoline was invented by a 16-year old? Neither did I. And that's not the only invention that has come from the minds of the youngins. This podcast explores the genius minds of kids, teenagers and young adults who run their own businesses, made incredible discoveries or come up with useful inventions. Inspiring, educational and fun to listen to.

TRUE CRIME

The Doodler

In the mid-1970s, a monster terrorized San Francisco’s gay community. He was coined “The Doodler,” and he may have been responsible for as many victims as the Zodiac Killer, yet you’ve probably never heard of him. For nearly 50 years, this serial killer has never been discovered. But renewed interest in the case from authorities is bringing hope that perhaps one day this killer will be brought to justice. A fascinating show about a serial killer many of us haven't heard of before.

MOVIES

You Are Good

Podcaster Sarah Marshall of "You're Wrong About" fame now also hosts this brilliant show with her co-host Alex Steed that aims to be different from all the other movie review podcasts out there. Those after all are a quite common. You are Good explores a different premise when it comes to fondly reviewing the movies of the 1980s and onwards. How do these movies make you feel?

Each week the hosts delve into a new movie with both a critical but mostly excited outlook to discuss how these movies made them feel and what sort of lasting impact it had on their lives, if any. Well worth a listen for any movie buffs.
