🏴‍☠️ Real-life treasure hunt vs. niche online business

Sometime around 2010 (the exact date is still a mystery), an old man went into the woods of Wyoming and hid a treasure chest full of gold and other valuable items.

(The total value of the "treasure" has been estimated at about $1.3 million).

Forrest Fenn, the old man, then wrote a book along with a poem that led people to the exact location of that treasure.

If you could decode the poem, you could go pick up the treasure and keep it.

Thus set off one of the greatest modern day treasure hunts of all time.

People went NUTS over finding this treasure. Lots of "normal" people thought they had it figured out.

Lots of crazy people thought they had it figured out. But of course they didn't.

No one found the treasure for over 10 years!

Then out of the blue last year in 2020, a 32 year old medical student from "back east" found the treasure!

Here's a couple picture's of it:

The story of Forrest Fenn's treasure is fascinating and nuanced, and I certainly can't tell it all in one email.

If you'd like the full story, you can read the book Chasing the Thrill: Obsession, Death, and Glory in America's Most Extraordinary Treasure Hunt by Daniel Barbarisi.

I just finished reading the book earlier this week and it's sparked a few thoughts as it relates to onine business that I'd like to share.

First, can you imagine hunting for a treasure, and spending thousands of dollars in the process, just to come up empty handed?

I see people treasure hunting or even mining for gold for that matter, and think, "boy, if they just put all that time and money into a different kind of treasure hunting they'd have a lot more to show for it."

I think of finding valuable niches and keyword research; or even completely different online business ideas as modern day treasure hunting.

I could spend years hunting through the backwoods of Wyoming and never have anything to show for it.

Or I could do some niche research, find some great "hidden treasure" keywords", and have a niche site making over $6,000 a month...or more.

(Own The Yard made about $6,500 last month and is just one of my niche sites).

Or I could hunt for online "treasure" in other ways as well. You could start a SaaS business. I've started a WordPress plugin called Link Whisper that is becoming more and more valuable each month.

The possibilities with a digital business are endless...and so much more likely to succeed than finding some hidden treasure on the ground.

The other thought I had as I read about the Forrest Fenn treasure hunt...was the niche itself!

There are so many obscure niches that can make money out there.

The "treasure hunting" niche is itself a topic that a niche site or a youtube channel could be created on.

In fact, some of the only people that made money off the Forrest Fenn treasure (besides the person that found it), were the bloggers and YouTubers talking about the treasure!

They were called "FennTubers" and a couple of them were moderatly successful (enough to pull in a decent side income).

There were also several bloggers that built sites and talked about Forrest Fenn's treasure for 10 years!

(Unfortunately, from my brief research, these bloggers built a nice following but never knew how to monetize their audience...they don't even have ads!).

Is it even possible to make money in the Treasure Hunting niche?

Well, I'm glad you asked!

I've been fascinated by this niche for a long time, and I actually built a treasure hunting niche site a few years ago.

I got the site to a decent little revenue of $2,000 a month and sold it a couple years ago.

I most definitely could have built it much bigger, but I was ready to move onto bigger treasures...projects.

Overall, I just wanted to get your wheels spinning about what is possible with a digital business and the fact that there are lots of really interesting niches out there.

Happy treasure hunting!
