Why do performance marketers need to learn brand marketing?

In a world where we all have the same tools, we can’t win with more data and slightly better optimization. Instead, we have to go back to what Bill Bernbach called “the last unfair advantage we’re legally allowed to take over our competitors” — creativity.
More and more of our marketing strategy work is ostensibly outsourced to Google and Facebook. We give them money, they get our message to the right people at the right time.
Our competitors are doing the same thing. So, Google and Facebook reward those who give them the most money with more customers.
This is not a sustainable or enviable position to be in. So, we return to the same question we had 10 years ago.
