Press Coverage: How to get coverage in the media (and whether it's worth the effort)

If you want to get media coverage proactively you should go through the following steps:

1. Research. Don't start before you are up to date with the newest trends in your industry, the journalists (+their contacts) and publications that write about your domain, and the places people in your niche usually use to get informed.

2. Build relationships. Using the list of influential people in your industry, interact with their content, tweet at them, DM them on LinkedIn, leave comments on their articles. Don't be spammy and only do this if you have something valuable to add to the conversation. Be friendly and human.

3. Create a press kit. If anybody decides to feature you and your business, they will need assets like logos, photos, videos, product demos, case studies, social proof. Be prepared.

4. It's time to reach out. Leverage the list you built and start contacting people. Personalize each message. Be respectful of people's time, be succinct, and straight to the point.

5. Work never stops. Any results you might get, don't stop iterating. Go through 1-4 again and again, continue your experiments and learning.

What about the results?

Results were.. umm.. not black or white. Hackers had different experiences, from significant spikes of traffic to only a few tens of new visits, and from bringing in double-digit month-over-month growth to not moving the needle at all. So use caution and try your own experiments. You will definitely learn something new.

A mix of organic and proactive approaches may get you the best results. Depending on the business (for example, more traditional ones), going for local publications may return the best results.
