Five Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 134th edition of Find That Pod.

As always, welcome new subscribers! If you're really into podcasts, (otherwise I'm not sure what you're doing here?!), I've opened up a few new accounts around various parts, so if you're so inclined you can follow me here:

Now onto the good stuff, here are this week's recommendations.

Dumbgeons & Dragons

As a member of the male Gen X generation, it's really no surprise that at one point or another, I partook in the teenage rite of passage of playing Dungeons and Dragons. Back in my day, it was the Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd edition system, but I digress. Suffice to say, I've ached to go back to the fantasy world of Dungeons and Dragons, and while I haven't quite found the time to, I've indulged in listening to play-through podcasts of players and Dungeon Masters engaging in varying adventures of swords and sorcery.

Unfortunately, I've had to wade through many not-so-great podcasts to stumble upon one that both honours the spirit of D&D and is a pleasure to listen to. That's where the Dumbgeons & Dragons podcast comes in. Four friends come together and tell tales of battling monsters, saving the world, and in the process entertain your ear holes. It's a smart, creative and often humorous podcast in which both seasoned and rookie players of Dungeons & Dragons will find plenty to enjoy. So if you've ever been D&D curious, this is a perfect gateway show to the land of magic, swords, and fantasy.

Evolution of Brand

Learning from the stories of other entrepreneurs and professionals through well-constructed interviews is one of the easiest ways to discover strategies and tactics for your own business or ventures. Well, at least that's a method I've used for new ideas in the past. That's what the Evolution of Brand podcast is all about. Hosted by Jason Cercone, each episode features an interesting blend of inspirational stories combined with proven, actionable tips, ideas, and tactics that you can take into your wisdom brain organ, let rattle around, and maybe make some use of. This podcast is just getting going, but seems like there's a lot of promise there!

PEOPLE Every Day

Ok, I'll admit, even at my ripe old age, I still get sucked into the world of celebrity and pop-culture news. There's still some part of my lizard brain that gets tickled hearing about the latest Hollywood gossip and pop-culture news. How else am I supposed to relate to all the young kids these days? Suffice to say, I need a daily podcast that will keep me away from the slings and arrows of embarrassment when I try to make some dated pop-culture reference on Twitter. Thankfully the PEOPLE Every Day podcast fits just such a role in my daily listening schedule.

Host Janine Rubenstein brings you PEOPLE’s unparalleled access and reporting on the biggest stories of the day, from celebrity exclusives and sneak peeks, to inspiring stories about extraordinary people. Give it a listen!

PERSONAL FINANCE

Millennial Money

I hate it when there are two podcasts with the exact same name. Yet here we are. But this time I'm talking about the Toronto Star edition of a podcast known as Millennial Money. This is mostly a podcast for Canadians, so you non-Canucks might want to skip past this one. But if you do hail from the land of the True North, and like so many of us, you enjoy a good bitch session about the price of real estate and worry that you're not contributing enough to your RRSPs or TFSAs, this is the show for you.

The series features a new person (or couple) each week. They are real people and situations, but their identities are protected with voice actors, in order to speak freely about what so many consider a very private topic: their finances. Suffice to say, it's one part useful advice podcast, one part voyeuristic journey into other Canadian's personal finances.

Downstream

The Streaming Wars are in full swing. Netflix, Apple TV+, Hulu, Disney+, Mercator, Paramount+, Prime Video, Peacock, HBO Max, Discovery+, Fubo TV, Crave. I actually made one of those up, but my point is there are so many of these goddamn services now, we might as well just go back to cable right? No, those days are gone, but we are in the midst of a battle between media giants, and just watching them duke it out is enough to bust out the popcorn.

That's what this new podcast from the RelayFM network is about. Hosts Julia Alexander and Jason Snell break down the business of binge-watching in the era of the Streaming Wars. Let the great content wars of the early 21st century continue!
