Five Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 130th edition of Find That Pod.

How's everyone doing? I've been getting the distinct feeling from reader feedback that there is growing angst happening in the podcasting community about the future of podcasting and the increased walled-garden problem that is popping up all over the place. I'll admit, I'm on the fence about this issue.

On the one hand, it was inevitable that podcasting would become a big business and those in power would try to build guarded moats in an attempt to monetize access. Not a huge surprise there. On the other hand, nefarious attempts at destroying the open RSS ecosystem of podcasts is, as they say, not cool. And those that are attempting to do so, should be called out and shunned.

On another note, the first batch of FTP stickers are going out this weekend. If you still want one, request one here.

As always, welcome new subscribers! Now, onto this week's recommendations.

Coffee & Convos

I'm perhaps as far away from a religious person as one can be. Even though I was raised Catholic, at some point I began to question the entire enterprise, and quickly began to recoil against the idea. And despite my heresy, I strongly believe in people's rights to believe in anything they want. So when this podcast came across my advertising calendar, I hesitated for a moment, almost reflexively not wanting to allow it in the newsletter. But after listening to it, and catching myself thinking about the fact that we need a diversity of voices in open forums of thought and ideas, I realized that my personal preferences should be put aside.

That and the Coffee & Convos podcast is actually a very good listen. Hosts Josh & Becca discuss a wide range of topics over, you guessed it, coffee. Everything from patience, to forgiveness, dealing with hurt, and other subjects related to life, culture, parenting, sexuality, and of-course theology are discussed in an open, thoughtful and entertaining way. Give it a listen!

Bald and Blonde

I've personally experienced the power of changing your mindset around certain ideas. It's a powerful but often overlooked tool for dealing with all manner of adversity. Such is the core message of the Bald and Blonde podcast. Filled with discussion on changing your mindset to live a happier and healthier life, the hosts take you on a journey of discovering real metal tools to inspire positive change in the way you think about problems, issues, and long-running bad habits. An excellent podcast for anyone looking to change their mode of thinking.

X-Ray Vision

Crooked media (you know, the guy's from Pod Save America) continue to expand their podcasting empire, and one of their new shows caught my ear. Hosted by emmy-award winner Jason Concepcion, X-Ray vision is that nerdy pop-culture / sci-fi podcast you didn't know you needed in your life. And yet here we are. Hold on to your cape as you journey through the zeitgeist-iest (patent pending) of film, TV, and comics. Test your fandom knowledge with panel discussions on the latest nerd news, casting, and show lore while staying tuned for deep dives into all of your favorite franchises. Time to go deep fellow nerds, REAL deep!

Cerebro

Continuing with the pop-culture theme, I recently came across this podcast and simply can't stop listening to it. That's probably because I'm a huge fan of Marvel's X-Men characters. As you probably guessed, that's what this podcast is all about. Hosted by literary agent Connor Goldsmith, Cerebro is an intense look at Marvel's Merry Mutants, the Uncanny X-Men. Each episode focuses on a single character and often includes interview guests, many of which are the writers and artists behind these characters.

The Constant: A History of Getting Things Wrong

Podcasts like this tickle me in a way I can't even describe to you. In fact, I secretly rage with jealousy at how good they are and how perhaps my one-day dream of being a podcaster will come close to coming with a concept this good. Here's the low-down:

Did you know that Europeans used to believe that sheep grew from Mongolian trees? Have you heard about the army that lost a battle against itself? Ever seen the gleaming Las Vegas hotel that accidentally shoots heat rays at poolside guests?

The Constant is a science and history podcast about getting things wrong. From ancient science to contemporary blunders, it takes you on journeys of misadventure and misapprehension, filling your brain with juicy nuggets of the sometimes comical, sometimes tragical and always fascinating ways people mess things up.

Love it!
