CXL - Embarrassed of myself from a year ago
I have 8 updates for you this week. 1. On my mind 'Anyone who isn't embarrassed of who they were last year probably isn't learning enough.'
I was thinking about this quote when I came across the story of Daniel Kahneman, the Nobel Prize winning author of “Thinking Fast and Slow” being asked if he still agreed with everything he wrote in the book. He said something like: "No. And I love being wrong because I love learning."
Adam Grant, the author of "Think Again," tells of an encounter with Kahneman. After a talk Grant gave, Kahneman, who was in the audience, came up to him afterward and said, “That was wonderful. I was wrong.”
When Grant asked for clarification, Kahneman explained: “No one enjoys being wrong, but I do enjoy having been wrong because it means I am now less wrong than I was before.”
I'm personally on a constant thinking and learning path putting together and testing theories on what makes companies win. My thinking is evolving week over week, and when I look back at myself like 2 years ago, there was so much naivete. As always, there's so much nuance to complex adaptive systems like business, and humans have a tendency to try to oversimplify things.
What's something you used to think a year ago, but no longer believe?
Follow Peep on LinkedIn for more thoughts on messaging, strategy & optimization. 2. Let's hang in Austin Imagine going to an event -- and not just sitting and staring at Powerpoints all day, but getting connected to people like you; people you actually want to know.
Get connected with people who have the same title at a similar company, or have similar goals as you. Do a few dinner parties in a single day with multiple groups of them.
That's how I'm going to do all my events going forward. Focus on facilitating conversations and people getting to know each other, and not who is on the stage. Because at the end in-person events are for relationships, not power points.
CXL10 is happening on the 17th of November. It's designed for making lasting connections. You should come. 3. New on the blog How to Craft a Digital Advertising Strategy that Combats Rising Costs and Captures New Customers
