‘Not Provided’ in Google Analytics: How to Reclaim Your Keyword Data by Mateusz Makosiewicz

Frustrated with seeing “(not provided)” in your Google Analytics? There are two ways around it:
  • Use Google Search Console (free). GSC will allow you to see the organic keywords you rank for (up to 1,000 keywords).
  • Use Ahrefs Webmaster Tools (free). You’ll be able to see all known keywords you rank for (no 1,000-keyword limit). Plus, you’ll also see different SEO metrics, a depersonalized SERP snapshot, and SERP features for every keyword.

19 Easy (But Effective) Digital Marketing Tip by Si Quan Ong

Give your digital marketing a boost with these 19 tips. One I’d like to highlight is the tactic of creating a statistics page.

For example, in 2020, we created a page on SEO statistics. It has performed incredibly well and has since racked up ~2,400 links from ~1,100 unique websites. It now ranks #1 for the term “SEO statistics.”

We actually covered our step-by-step process in a case study, so I highly recommend you to read or watch it

Fractured Search Intent: Understanding Mixed SERPs by Sam Oh

Fractured/mixed intent (or “queries with multiple meanings,” as Google calls it) are SERPs where people are looking for different things. A simple example is the query “apple,” where people can either be looking for the technology company or the fruit.

In Google’s Quality Raters Guidelines, Google shows an example of how it deals with these types of SERPs. Basically, it looks at the dominant, common, and minor interpretations of each query.

So, if you want to rank for these SERPs, you have to figure out the dominant intent. Sam suggests three steps:
  1. Analyze the organic blue link results
  2. Analyze the SERP features
  3. Analyze the SERP’s stability vs. its volatility

New Robots Tag: indexifembedded [Article]

Google has introduced a new robots tag: indexifembedded (incredible name 😳). This tag allows you to tell Google you still want your content indexed when it's embedded through iframes and similar HTML tags in other pages—even when the content page has the noindex tag.

How We Generated $250M of Lifetime Traffic Value (LTTV) in 2021 [Substack]

This is an incredible post from IBM’s Bryan Casey about the realities of managing inbound marketing for a large enterprise company.

Getting the strategy right is one aspect. But managing stakeholders and getting people to buy in are other important aspects of doing SEO at a large company.

I especially enjoyed his three-level comms plan that built momentum around his program:
  • Level 1 (close collaborators) – This was a community of ~50-75 people that Bryan and his team worked closely with and whose work was directly impacted by them. Bryan and the team communicated with these collaborators via Slack.
  • Level 2 (leadership) – Bryan’s team put together a couple of summary slides every month that showed the progress.
  • Level 3 (masses) – Sharing what IBM was learning and doing. The goal was to project sophistication and nurture a curious, expert community of marketing practitioners.
We Studied 81,000 Page Titles - Google Rewrote 61% of Them [Article]

Cyrus Shepard and his team analyzed a total of 80,959 title tags across 2,370 sites and compared them against desktop Google results.

They found that Google rewrote 61.6% of the titles. Here are common scenarios where Google rewrote titles:
  • Length: overly long and short titles
  • Using the same keyword more than once
  • Use of title separators, such as dashes or pipes
  • Titles with [brackets] or (parentheses)
  • Identical boilerplate used across many titles
  • Missing or superfluous brand names
Till next time. ;)

Cheers,
Si Quan
