Hi Friend-

As we reckon with ever-deepening levels of global uncertainty with the outbreak of war in Ukraine, I have been reflecting on the Zen koan: "Not knowing is most intimate." These past few years have been a masterclass in "not knowing."

For those of us who currently have the luxury of knowing where we'll sleep tonite and that we will be safe, please consider sharing what you can with those who are living in extreme precarity.

To lend your support to the Ukrainians and other displaced citizens who need food, shelter, and safety, you can find a variety of resources on donating, volunteering, boycotting, and more at Helpsaveukraine.com. To give aid to BIPOC fleeing Ukraine, there are resources here and here. To support safe passage for LGBTQIA+ folks, there are resources here and here.

If you would like to get more informed about the history of the region, try some of the books on this list. I particularly enjoy the work of Masha Gessen, who writes regularly for the New Yorker here.

Sending you warmth,
Jocelyn

What is it to imagine beyond our current paradigm? On the latest episode of Hurry Slowly, I speak with artist and organizer Amahra Spence about what it means to be an artist and how we can imagine beyond our current paradigms: “I come from this long lineage of people who know how to make things out of nothing every day, if that’s not radical imagination, I don’t know what is. This is the lived experience of my whole community, of working class people, of queer people, of people having to create their own every day. Having been disinvested and having been unloved, having been uncared for or untended to, and we call it survival. So how do we combine this idea that there are people who are creating from nothing and not being invested in — but are creating so much value in the world? What would they do if they could have their material needs met? What would they do if they had their access needs met? What would they build?”

A cognitive skill to magnify humanity. A wonderful interview from On Being with Trabian Shorters about “asset-framing” — rather than “deficit-framing” — as a way to truly change culture: “Asset-framing is a direct expression of the love doctrine, right? It is defining people by their aspirations and contributions, before you get to their challenges. So whatever is going on in someone’s life, you don’t ignore it, but you don’t define them by the worst moment or the worst experience or the worst potential; none of that. You have to look past their faults, to see who they really are. And even the word “aspiration,” we are very intentional about that, because it has the word “spirit” baked into it.”

This is about more than naps. Tricia Hersey, founder of the Nap Ministry, puts “rest is resistance” in context: “This is about more than naps. It is not about fluffy pillows, expensive sheets, silk sleep masks or any other external, frivolous, consumerist gimmick. It is about a deep unraveling from white supremacy and capitalism. These two systems are violent and evil. History tells us this and our present living shows this. Rest pushes back and disrupts a system that views human bodies as a tool for production and labor. It is a counter narrative. We know that we are not machines. We are divine.”

The truth must dazzle gradually. A thoughtful piece from Simon Sarris on how compressed, reductive, short-term thinking has become the norm, to our detriment: "Many concepts can be explained concisely, in simple language, and we should all strive for clarity. But the aphorism is a mistake, for a number of thoughts approximate the carpenter’s craft, and to meaningfully reveal them requires time and attention. Sometimes these cannot simply be told to another at all, they must be grown. For a topical example, we know that maturity itself cannot be imparted to a six year old, no matter how good a summary we might give. Despite our understanding, we know it is something that can only come to each of us in time. This pattern is more common than we think. True things are disclosed slowly."

The Alpinist is a fascinating (and heartbreaking) documentary.
