6 Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 153rd edition of Find That Pod.

A very busy week for me, so I'm going to keep things short this week. Let's get straight to it.

Here are this week's recommendations:

Spoilerpiece Theatre

If you're looking for a weekly film and occasional TV review podcast that is hosted by more than mere amateurs, Spoilerpiece Theatre might be right for you. Hosted by members of the Boston Online Film Critics Association, this podcast is focused on helping you decide what you should watch next. And while the focus is on trying to avoid spoilers, the occasional slip-up does occur. Nevertheless, it's a long-running show with plenty of intelligent discourse on today's film landscape. So whether you're a true cinephile or simply looking to up your movie-watching game, I'd recommend giving this show a whirl.

American Hostage

Based on a true story, American Hostage stars Jon Hamm as Fred Heckman, a beloved local radio reporter who is thrust into the middle of a life-or-death crisis when hostage-taker, Tony Kiritsis, demands to be interviewed on his popular radio news program. Kiritsis has tied a shotgun to his banker’s neck in grim fashion, but through Heckman's radio show he gradually becomes a media sensation and unexpected anti-hero during a nail-biting 63-hour standoff.

COMEDY

Let's Make a Sci-Fi

Another awesomely unique podcast format. Can three comedians create a legit sci-fi show? Comedians Ryan Beil, Maddy Kelly, and Mark Chavez are going to find out. Over eight episodes, they’ll try to write a serious, and seriously nerdy, pilot script. When they run into trouble they’ll consult Hollywood experts who have worked on things like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Firefly and science fiction superstars like Neil deGrasse Tyson, Rainn Wilson, Emily VanDerWerff and Neill Blomkamp. And in the final episode, professional actors will read their script, bringing it to life — for better or worse.
