6 Great New Podcasts

Welcome to the 148th edition of Find That Pod.

The fallout from Spotify's ties with Joe Rogan continued this week with more prominent, albeit, older musicians pulling their stuff from the company's platform along with some mid-sized podcasters.

What's even more interesting however is that I've seen many podcasting platforms reporting a huge spike in new users.

Also, I've got a new poll running on twitter, I'm curious to hear your takes: The best podcasts are found in the _____ genre.

You'll also notice that I've added Podchaser links to the bottom of each podcast if you're a fan of that platform.

Here are this week's recommendations:

The Stack Overflow Podcast

The world runs on code. And I'm willing to bet that some not-insignificant percentage of you are either software engineers or work in some sort of software development adjacent position or industry. After all, as Marc Andreessen famously quipped: "Software is eating the world".

With that said, I'm sure many of you have heard about or actively use Stack Overflow. It's a public platform used by nearly everyone who codes to learn, share their knowledge, collaborate, and build their careers. But did you know that they also have an incredibly long-running and popular podcast?

Celebrating its 12th anniversary it's a must-listen for any programmer that wants to learn more about how the art and practice of software programming are changing our world. From Rails to React, from Java to Node.js, the show hosts important conversations and fascinating guests that will help you understand how technology is made and where it’s headed.

Quirk of the Day

The word "quirky" is a good place to start in describing this show. It's off-beat, it's funny, and it's probably not what you'd expect from your typical comedy podcast. Autumn Simmons aka Quirky Girl is the creator, producer, writer and star of the award-winning non-viral sitcom web series, The Quirk Chronicles. Quirk of the Day features sketch and/or scripted comedy, as well as surprise guests. Topics often veer into pop culture, TV shows, movies, and more. Sometimes it's good to go off the beaten path in your listening habits, and this show provides that in spades.

BUSINESS

Business Breakdowns

I love shows that go deep on individual topics. That's what makes this podcast pretty great. It's a series of conversations with investors, insiders and former higher-ups at large companies. For each business, the show explores its history, its business model, its competitive advantages, and what makes it tick. Business breakdowns is an ideal listen for seasoned and budding entrepreneurs.

The Nocturnists

What is a doctor? What is healing? What are the forces that drive clinician burnout and moral distress? The Nocturnists is an incredible podcast designed to answer some of these questions. It's a vibrant community of healthcare workers who celebrate the humanity of healing and treating patients through vivid, heartbreaking and uplifting storytelling. This is a truly stupendous podcast that I want everyone to experience. It drips with empathy, sarcasm, and amazing stories from those we turn to in our times of illness and despair.

HISTORY

Cold War Conversations

If you're a Gen X'er like me, you will have lived through at least some of the tail end of the Cold War. It's both a scary and fascinating time in our shared history, and this podcast is all about preserving the stories of that time.

Hosted by Ian Sanders, this podcast's primary aim is to capture the lesser-known stories of the Cold War before they're lost to the ravages of time forever. Featuring first-person accounts, it's a great little time capsule for anyone interested in the back-and-forth between the USSR, its allies and the forces of the Western World led by the United States.

Not Overthinking

What happens when you bring together a doctor and a data scientist? Apparently a pretty great podcast. Hosted by Ali and Taimur Abdaal, and occasionally joined by guests Not Overthinking is a podcast about happiness, creativity, and the human condition.

The show covers various topics designed to help both the hosts and listeners find better ways of thinking doing and experiencing well-being. That includes things like social interaction, lifestyle design, mental models and more. A great weekly show to delve into.
