As start-ups begin to accumulate success and generate momentum, they will inevitably need to scale up. The conditions at which this desire begins are pretty predictable. A company has sold from $2 million to $10 million in ARR and wants to keep growing. You’ve identified a persona to sell to and a problem you solve for buyers. Or, perhaps, you’ve secured a new round of funding and want to live up to the hype. For whatever reason, the company is ready to exit startup status and prepare to scale-up.

Dave Kellogg, Executive-In-Residence at Balderton Capital, breaks down the most common mistakes companies make when going from startup to scale-up. He helps showcase these errors and advises on how to stop them from crippling a business’s growth.

Dreamforce has announced, for now, at least, it will not require any Covid testing or vaccination:

”In accordance with local state and city guidelines, we [Salesforce] are currently not requiring proof of vaccination or implementing a testing protocol for Dreamforce. This is always subject to change.”

We’ve already gotten a few questions if we plan to do the same, and we expect quite a few more.  The answer is nope.  No changes to our Health & Safety policies.

So a great founder doing tens of millions in ARR recently asked me what I thought of doing a “small IPO” as they approached $100m in ARR.  It’s something we don’t see too often these days, as $200m+ ARR sort of became the new floor to IPO in SaaS.

But I thought I’d take a deeper look at one example, Weave.  Weave started off as a dental ERP and comms platform (including  VoIP / phone), and then expanded beyond that as it scaled.  Today, it crosses dentistry, optometry, veterinary, physical therapy, specialty medical services, audiology, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and other home services.

Patrick Collison, CEO and co-founder of mammothly successful Stripe, a while back put together a list of things to do from age 10 to 20 to be a successful entrepreneur.  I do wish I’d done all those things.  In a small way, a few of those age 10-20 skills I did acquire from starting a tiny software company then were what carried through to whatever success I’ve had.  But I didn’t really get started as an entrepreneur until a little later than the 10-20 age bracket. 

It got me thinking a bit about now. So I put together a list of things that are easier, harder, and the same now vs younger me.
