The tech IPO market might be slowing down in 2022, but that does not mean there are no other ways for a startup to exit.  This week I want to explore five

• Direct Listing - also known as direct public offerings, or DPOs—is an alternative to the traditional initial public offering, or IPO, as a way to go public. allowing shares held by private investors, management and employees to publicly trade on the stock market—no new capital is raised through the listing. Spotify, Slack, Palantir and Asana all went public via direct listing.  Read more
• SPAC - Special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, have been around in various forms for decades, but during the past three years they’ve taken off in the United States. In 2019, 59 were created, with $13 billion invested; in 2020, 247 were created, with $80 billion invested; in 2021, 679 were created, with $172.2 billion invested and in 2022, only 79 were created, with $12.8 billion invested so far.
• Secondary Sales - A secondary sale is the sale by an existing stockholder of shares in a private company to a third party that does not occur in connection with an acquisition of the company. When a lot of secondary sales happen together as part of the same transaction, it is sometimes referred to as a liquidity round. Menlo, Benchmark, First Round famously sold their Uber stakes to Softbank worth hundreds of millions. Read more
