Being On Twitter Is Dangerous | Marketing Junto

My Take

Watching the dumpster fire get bigger and bigger over at Twitter every day, I have to shed a tear. I had been on that network since September 2007. I made some great friends there. But with the ascendance of Elon Musk to the throne of Twitter, things are going downhill fast.

Personally, I think Elon is in above his head. Yes, electric cars, rockets, and satellites are complex, but running a huge and popular social network is a whole other beast. With the top security officials leaving last week from the company, users need to take heed that it really is the wild west and brands need to be on their game. Anyone with $8 can get a blue checkmark and many are getting them for less-than-honorable reasons.

Now we all know that I'm a huge fan of the fediverse and in particular Mastodon. It isn't a 1-for-1 replacement for Twitter. Not in the slightest, but it's the closest thing we have to something similar. The good thing about Mastodon is moderation is up to the individual communities/instances to control. Not some ambiguous team in an ivory tower.

On Monday, Jeff the administrator of Newsie.Social, a journalist-oriented Mastodon instance, limited the reach of another instance for journalists, because the latter wasn't doing as good of a job with moderation. This was his choice to make, and he made it. He said that once the other instance got a hold of the moderation, he'd be happy to take off the limit.

That's the beauty of the fediverse, it's up to the communities. What do you think? Have you evacuated Twitter? Where are you focusing now? Hit reply and let me know!
