  1. Summary
The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 capitol riot released a summary of its final report on Monday, and made criminal referrals to the Department of Justice against former President Trump. The referrals are historic but largely symbolic, as the Justice Department is not obligated to act on them and is conducting its own investigation.

The committee described Trump as the "central cause" of the riot, and alleged he knew his actions to pressure VP Mike Pence and state officials to challenge the results were illegal. It recommends Trump be charged for obstruction of an official proceeding, defrauding the United States, making false statements, and conspiracy to incite an insurrection.

“What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger,” Trump said in response. “These folks don’t get it that when they come after me, people who love freedom rally around me. It strengthens me.” The panel also recommended four GOP lawmakers be charged for failing to comply with subpoenas, including House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy.

Should parents of mass shooters be charged if they helped the shooter acquire guns?

632 votes, 89 comments

Context: Father of Highland Park July 4 parade shooter charged.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - If the parent doesn't know with certainty that the kid is stable, they do not have the moral authority to authorize the child to own a gun, and should have the legal liability for the kid if they are saying the kid is safe with a deadly weapon by sponsoring the purchase. In the recent charges, the father knew the kid was unstable, suicidal, history of threats to the family - absolutely responsible for any bad outcomes by the inconceivably bad judgment to support the son to get a weapon.

Unsure - In theory it's okay. In the two cases where this has happened (Michigan school shooting + July 4 parade shooting) the parents helped their kids get guns despite extremely obviou...

No - Parents assist their children in legally acquiring firearms every day in America. In this instance, the father legally assisted his child with a firearm purchase some three years before the...
