What do new 'Twitter Files' docs show about the government's relationship with Twitter?

Source: Twitter

  1. Summary
Recent releases of the 'Twitter Files' have shed some light on the nature of the federal government's relationship with the social media company. On Tuesday, Lee Fang of The Intercept reported that the company allowed accounts that were secretly backed by the US government to remain active on the platform in violation of its own manipulation policies.

Many of the Pentagon-backed accounts were aimed at shaping opinion in the Middle East. One account defended US drone strikes in Yemen, while others promoted US-backed militias in Syria or anti-Iran sentiment in Iraq. The new documents align with an August report by private researchers that uncovered a US influence campaign.

Documents released on Monday show that the FBI sent Twitter money to cover the costs of moderating content which FBI requested be examined. Twitter's policy states that the company may seek reimbursement from law enforcement for certain costs. The documents thus far have shown that Twitter did not always agree to the FBI's removal requests.

Should the Title 42 border policy be made permanent?

Context: Supreme Court temporarily blocks the expiration of Title 42.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - The government needs to be able to control its borders. I don't think Title 42 is the long term answer, but the border communities aren't capable of caring for the flood of immigrants that are poised to enter without it. So, permanent until something better is developed.
