What does new data on former President Trump's tax returns reveal?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
A report from the House Ways and Means Committee found the IRS failed to perform audits of former President Trump for the first half of his term. The report was released hours after the committee voted to release his tax returns to the public over the coming days.

The report does not suggest that Trump pressured the IRS to ignore his returns, and instead says the IRS' process was dormant. However, the report says his administration may have disregarded an IRS rule that mandates presidential audits. An accompanying report by a different congressional committee also criticized the IRS' handling of the audits.

Trump's tax returns have been controversial since he broke tradition by refusing to release them on the campaign trail. Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee argued releasing them would create a dangerous precedent that could allow Congress to reveal other figures' taxes publicly for political purposes. A Trump spokesman told Newsweek that the panel should release Rep. Nancy Pelosi's returns.
