What has been the impact of this weekend's winter storm?

Source: Environmental Protection Agency

  1. Summary
A massive winter storm hit the United States over the holidays, affecting people from the Pacific Northwest to upstate New York. Roughly 30 people have died because of the storm, named Elliott, over the weekend. Buffalo, NY, was hit particularly hard. At least 10 people died in the county, and several others died in the surrounding area. City officials said the storm created the most severe winter conditions since 1977.

At least 60% of the U.S. population was under a weather advisory as of Sunday. The National Weather Service said that in some areas, being outdoors for a few minutes could lead to frostbite. 1.5 million people lost power in total, but by Sunday that had decreased to about 250,000.

Thousands of domestic flights were delayed or canceled over the weekend. The Environmental Defense Fund has said that climate change likely leads to increased snowfall during snowstorms. Additionally, the warming Arctic may result in a more unstable jet stream that allows polar air to travel farther south than it would otherwise.

YESTERDAY'S POLL

Should it be illegal for political candidates to lie about their resumes or backgrounds?

592 votes, 79 comments

Context: Congressman-elect suspected of lying about many of his qualifications.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - When anyone applies for a job, they can be fired for misrepresentation if they lie on their resume. If someone wishes to be in a position of power over some facet of society, it is harder to remove them if they have misrepresented themselves, so there should be a higher standard and stiffer punishment for doing so. Plus, having such power means that society needs to have a modicum of trust in said person in the first place, so misrepresentation seems more serious than simply embellishing your title or accomplishments on a resume when you are applying for a job that doesn't have such implications.

No - Illegal? No. Cause for removal from their elected position? Absolutely! If we make thin...

Unsure - It is definitely unethical and in my gut I want to say yes, it should be illegal. But we can’t make everything illegal. [...] Is there going to be a...
