  1. Summary
On Thursday the Senate passed a $1.7 trillion spending bill that will fund the government until next September. It is expected to pass the House. The bill passed 68 to 29, with 18 Republicans voting in favor. Of the $1.7 trillion, $772.5 billion is for non-defense discretionary spending and $858 billion is for defense. The bill was over 4,000 pages and released to Senators two days before the vote, which GOP Sen. Rand Paul criticized.

The bill includes $45 billion for Ukraine, coming on the heels of President Zelenskyy's address to Congress. The U.S. has already given $68 billion in aid to Ukraine since the invasion. The bill will also require President Biden to create guidelines to remove TikTok from government devices.

The bill includes stronger workplace protections for pregnant mothers and allocates $40 billion for communities recovering from natural disasters. The legislation also contains reforms to the Electoral Count Act, which clarifies rules around the counting of electoral votes in a bid to prevent future attempts to subvert a presidential election.

Should businesses be allowed to use facial recognition to bar people from entry?

Context: Entertainment venue uses facial recognition to kick out customer working for law firm suing the venue.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Businesses have the right to be petty and absurd. We have the right to mock them and publicly embarrass them, I think these things are enshrined, huh? [...] This is electronic or digital facial recognition being used, not facial recognition. After all people can recognize faces and bouncers have long excluded persona non grata from venues because they recognized them.

No - I certainly see the utility and desire of facial recognition, but see far too much potential for abuse. With ever-growing corporate conglomerates and the continuous dismantling of individual liberty,...
