How has Memphis responded to public outcry over the video of Tyre Nichols' beating?

  1. Summary
On Monday Memphis, Tennessee issued more punishments to workers in relation to the Jan. 10 death of Tyre Nichols. Nichols, a 29-year-old black man, was beaten for several minutes straight during a traffic stop; the video was made public last week and has evoked widespread outrage.

Initially five black officers involved in the incident were fired and later charged. On Monday Memphis dismissed Preston Hemphill, who is white, as well as another unnamed officer. Hemphill could be heard saying on video that he stunned Nichols. Three emergency personnel were also fired: the city says the ambulance called for Nichols waited for nearly 30 minutes at the scene before departing to a hospital.

Most of the officers disciplined over the incident were part of the Scorpion unit, which targeted violent criminals in high-crime areas. The unit has now been disbanded. Nichols' death has led to calls for renewed Congressional negotiations on police reform. Previous negotiations broke down in 2021, with qualified immunity being a major point of contention.

Do you expect the U.S. and China to go to war within this decade?

Context: U.S. Air Force general tells his troops he expects war with China in 2025.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - This is rhetoric much like the cold war with Russia. We heard all through the 80s that war was going to break out any day. If China does come after Taiwan then maybe we help protect them and that somehow pulls us into war. I think Xi would think better of this considering how Russia was looked at by the rest of the world for attacking Ukraine. It also exposed them as a paper tiger. A similar issue could be seen with China and the last thing Xi wants is to look weak.

Unsure - It's going to largely depend on what happens in China in the next few years. Covid-19 is now hitting them hard as Xi took all the r...
