What will be impacted by the end of the national Covid-19 emergency?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
On Monday the White House announced that the national Covid-19 emergency declaration will end on May 11. The announcement comes as the GOP-led House voted to end the declaration. The move likely means that at-home Covid-19 tests will cease to be free, and the antibody treatment Paxlovid could become much more expensive.

The expiration of the emergency declaration means that 5 to 14 million Americans could lose access to Medicaid. Millions enrolled in the program during the pandemic, in part because of a federal rule that prevented states from removing people from Medicaid. A spending bill recently passed by Congress will allow states to remove people again.

The declaration's end could undermine the administration's legal argument for student loan forgiveness, which rested on emergency powers. The Supreme Court is due to consider the issue in February. Regarding potential legal concerns, an administration official told ABC News that the pandemic has still had a lasting financial impact on student borrowers.

Is it important for the Census to track the racial makeup of the U.S.?

Context: Biden administration proposes changes to how the Census would collect data on racial demographics.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - I work at a public, land grant university. With the history of racial exclusion in higher education, it's important that we have data on racial makeup in the state to ensure we are truly serving "the public." I would love to live in a post-race world where race didn't matter, but we aren't there yet.

No - Race is a made up construct from ages ago. Black, brown, and white people can have more similar DNA than people who look more like them, etc. I think it’s important to ...

Unsure - Being that the entire concept of "race" is an 18th-century fiction, ...
