How is the AP African American Studies course changing?

  1. Summary
On Wednesday the College Board, which regulates Advanced Placement classes, unveiled changes to its new African American Studies course. The course no longer incorporates certain scholars, such as Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, who pioneered critical race theory, and Ta-Nehisi Coates, an advocate of reparations. Some contemporary topics, like Black Lives Matter, are no longer part of the final exam.

The change comes after Florida said it would not allow the course, saying it violated state laws on how race-related issues are taught. The state already requires the teaching of African American history. Gov. DeSantis on Tuesday also proposed mandating certain content at state universities.

The College Board said that politics did not impact the course update, and that it has a time-stamped document showing the changes were approved before Florida officials first rejected the course. But PEN America, a free speech group, said the Board risked sending the message that political threats can censor what is taught.

Should the legality of late-term abortions be left to states?

349 votes, 52 comments

Context: Minnesota codifies right to abortion, which Republicans say drops guardrails for late-term abortions.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Late term abortion should be left alone. I don't know why Americans can't understand that abortion after 20 weeks (i.e. late term abortion) is extremely rare, extremely expensive, and very highly regulated. The only time the procedure is done this late is when the fetus is not compatible with life. [...] These choices greatly impact mental & physical health and treatment of medical issues should be decided by the patient with advice from trained physicians.

No - Just as states cannot, because of our Constitutional right to our lives, enact a law allowing allowing murders ...

Unsure - First based on the context let us define "late term" as 21 weeks rather than 3rd trimester (27 weeks) as I would normally define it. If we use viability as a standard this is a shifting standard as technology shifts. Depending upo...
