Why was Rep. Ilhan Omar stripped of her committee assignment?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
On a party-line vote of 218-211, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was removed from her seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which she has held since 2018, over past antisemitic comments. She is the third Democrat to be blocked from a committee assignment. Republicans cited Democrats' 2021 votes to remove Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar from their committee assignments as precedent.

It was initially unclear if there were enough votes to remove Rep. Omar. Several Republican representatives opposed it, and only agreed to vote with the party after Speaker McCarthy promised guardrails for future committee removals. Rep. Ken Buck, one of the lawmakers McCarthy persuaded, said Congress needs to "stop this nonsense of kicking people off committees."

Rep. Omar received bipartisan condemnation in 2019 for comments about pro-Israel lobbying in Congress, in particular for saying “it’s all about the Benjamins baby." The removal resolution also cited her previous description of Israel as an "apartheid state."

Should companies be required to show all fees upfront in their online booking systems?

467 votes, 43 comments

Context: President Biden proposes limiting credit card fees plus requiring better fee disclosure for airlines, event tickets, etc.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - We don't need to assume that market forces inevitably result in greater transparency. Companies can race to the bottom as easily as they race to the top, with the big players in an industry all concealing their fees until the last possible moment. In this case forcing all companies to be clearer about their actual cost would probably promote competition, because customers can see more easily where the better deal is.

Yes - However, looking at the context of [these] "late fees" I don't recall any situation where I have not had these terms explicitly laid out in the terms of the agreement. If you sign a document without reading it the ...
