How have U.S. leaders responded to the downing of the Chinese spy balloon?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
Responses to the U.S. military's downing of an apparent Chinese spy balloon over coastal waters Saturday have been mixed. The Pentagon said the balloon was traveling over the continental U.S. since Tuesday, and President Biden said that he ordered the balloon be shot down "as soon as possible," but the military waited until it was clear of populated areas so as to minimize damage from debris.

A senior defense official said that letting the balloon make its course allowed the U.S. to study it better. The House Democratic leader thanked President Biden for "putting the safety of the American people first."

Some criticized Biden for not shooting down the balloon sooner. Senate Minority Leader McConnell said "It defies belief to suggest there was nowhere between [Alaska] and the coast of Carolina where this balloon could have been shot down right away without endangering Americans." The Biden administration noted that Chinese spy balloons entered U.S. airspace during the Trump administration and were not shot down.
