  1. Summary
The effects of a train derailment that occurred last Friday in northeastern Ohio continued to be felt Monday. 50 cars in the 150-car train went off the tracks, of which 10 contained hazardous materials. Five cars held vinyl chloride, a gas that can cause dizziness, nerve damage, and even death. Authorities also said parts of the train could explode.

The EPA was investigating to see if the crash posed a threat to the rural community near the derailment, East Palestine, which has a population of about 5,000 people. Residents within a one-mile radius of the derailment, about 1,500 to 2,000 people, were ordered to evacuate. Roughly 25% of those under the order declined to evacuate on Sunday night, prompting local officials to threaten misdemeanor charges.

Local news reported Monday night that a controlled breach of several rail cars to drain the toxic fumes was successful. The cause of the derailment is not fully known, and it could be several weeks before a complete report is made.

Should the alleged Chinese spy balloon have been shot down earlier?

537 votes, 63 comments

Context: President Biden criticized for not having the apparent Chinese spy balloon shot down earlier.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Every second that balloon was in the air it was not only gathering information that could be used against us, but also signaled our absolute apathy for inappropriate and aggressive behavior by the CCP. Everything the CCP does is a test of how others will respond, and we only embolden them and increase the likelihood of more aggressive and dangerous actions in the future.

No - No, and here is why from the perspective of a DOD intelligence professional. Since we knew it was there, we can take actions to deny its ability to collect informat...

Unsure - The balloon is pretty blatant and the US is well within its rights to shoot it down. But then China is well within its rights to shoot down any surveil...
