Why is the Biden administration taking more actions over the Ohio train derailment?

Source: Associated Press

  1. Summary
The Biden administration is increasing its response to the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. The administration, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in particular, have been criticized for not doing more. Buttigieg said little about the incident shortly after it happened, and more recently said he plans to visit the area "when the time is right."

On Tuesday Buttigieg called on Norfolk Southern and other companies to speed up their adoption of DOT 117 train cars, which prevent the release of a car's contents in the event of an accident. Current Transportation Department rules require companies use such cars by 2029.

The Transportation Department is also working to restore a rule, rescinded by the Trump administration, that requires at least two crew members to operate most trains. Meanwhile, the EPA on Tuesday ordered Norfolk Southern to pay for clean-up costs. The agency also said Norfolk Southern repaired the train tracks without removing contaminated soil, and ordered them to take the tracks back up and remove the soil.

Should the TSA raise its fines for those who bring guns to an airport checkpoint?

461 votes, 66 comments

Context: TSA intercepted a record number of firearms at airport security checkpoints last year.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Yes - Carrying a firearm should not be something you forget you're doing. That level of complacency is irresponsible. Fines should be increased but it should also be a strike against their concealed carry license if not a revocation of it. Any subsequent violation of the no guns policy should be a felony arrest and a few months in jail. This is from the standpoint of someone who owns guns and carries a firearm in Texas.

No - The current fines are significant financial penalties for the average gun owner, and they are clearly not working give...
