How does the FDA propose classifying plant-based milk in stores?

Source: Bloomberg

  1. Summary
On Thursday the FDA issued new draft guidance ruling that manufacturers of plant-based drinks (like soy, oat, or almond milk) can call their products "milk" in stores as long as they label what type of dairy alternative the milk is. The products cannot simply be labeled "milk" alone.

The guidance follows a years-long effort by the dairy industry to have dairy alternatives lose the label "milk." One-third of U.S. households bought dairy alternatives in 2016, up from one-fifth in 2010. In issuing the guidance, the FDA concluded that consumers are not confused by the difference between dairy and plant-based milks.

However, the FDA expressed concern that people are unaware of the nutritional differences, so the guidance calls for producers of dairy alternatives to voluntarily add more nutritional information. The National Milk Producers Federation hailed the guidance, but noted the FDA itself defines milk as coming from animals. The group said it would push Congress to act on stricter labeling.

Should state supreme court justices be elected or appointed?

353 votes, 40 comments

Context: Race for seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court is set to pass a political spending record.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

Elected - I don't live in Wisconsin, so my opinion really doesn't matter much. Elections are going to be influenced by contributions. If a Governor gets elected by "influence" and they appoint - there really isn't much difference to a judge being elected by "influence." When in doubt, I default to the constitution of that state, and in this case I support that the "people" are allowed to make the decision on who should be on their state supreme court.

Appointed - The judiciary is not a political branch of government. The political branches of government (legislative and executive) decide and enforce policy, th...

Unsure - I don't like either choice. If appointed the justices will do what the appointing governor wishes for the most part; if elected they will be...
