  1. Summary
Multiple areas across the United States faced severe winter weather over the weekend. A storm dumped relatively large amounts of snow in Southern California, prompting Los Angeles County to issue a blizzard warning for only the second time in its history. San Diego also issued its first-ever blizzard warning. Temperatures in San Francisco (in Northern California) were the coldest in over a century.

Though the California storm has not been directly tied to climate change, it does track with models that predict more extreme weather. The snowfall is expected to help ease California's historic drought, and reservoir levels are better than in recent years.

Meanwhile in Michigan, over 900,000 customers were without power for several days as a massive snowstorm blanketed the region. Over 130,000 people still lacked power as of late Sunday night, which prompted a leading lawmaker in the state's House of Representatives to call for hearings into Michigan's electric grid.

Should plant-based dairy alternatives be called milk?

449 votes, 54 comments

Context: FDA draft guidance allows plant-based milk producers to use the term 'milk.'

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I buy sugar-free almond milk to make smoothies and protein shakes. When I look at the nutritional information, there is nothing really there. For me, it's 30-40 calories a cup which is fine. There is not, however, any significant protein, carb, fat, vitamins, etc. It's just processed liquid of some sort. I drink it and am not complaining but it's not milk. I wouldn't encourage children to drink it regularly. Then again, I think they should drink a limited amount of whole milk and that's it but that's another question entirely.

Yes - The definition of milk isn't limited to mammals. Plant-based definitions of milk have been used for a long time (e.g., milkweed, milk tree). It...

Unsure - I'm fine with the FDA's ruling. Milk or not-mil...
