How did Supreme Court justices react to arguments about student debt cancellation?

Source: Census Bureau

  1. Summary
The Supreme Court heard two cases challenging President Biden's student debt cancellation. In the first, Missouri argued the debt relief would harm the finances of its loan servicer (which is not a party to the case). In the second case, two borrowers ineligible for relief accused the administration of acting without considering all Americans' interest.

The Biden administration argued the 2003 HEROES Act explicitly gives the Education Secretary authority to waive federal student loans in an emergency. Conservative justices were skeptical. "We're talking about half a trillion dollars and 43 million Americans [...] I think most [would say] that's something for Congress to act on," Chief Justice John Roberts said.

Liberal justices continually questioned whether the plaintiffs had legal standing to sue the administration, as precedent indicates plaintiffs must be directly harmed to sue over a policy. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said government would struggle to function if lawsuits can be made over the "most minor state interests."

Should Disney be allowed to govern the Reedy Creek Improvement District in Florida?

402 votes, 40 comments

Context: Florida governor to select members of the board that governs Disney's semi-autonomous district.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - I think DeSantis' reasoning is a bit silly and definitely just political. But the fact remains that the Reedy Creek district's charter literally gives Disney the authority to build a nuclear plant at its own discretion. That kind of legal authority is simply absurd, so it's well worth taking another look at the district. [...] Go ahead and provide incentives I guess, but we don't need mega-corporations to act as governments

Yes - Disney's track record on managing Reedy Creek is nothing but excellent. This punishment DeSantis has thrown up is nothing but partisa...
