  1. Summary
On March 4, about a month after one of its trains derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, a second Norfolk Southern train derailed near Springfield, Ohio. The company said 28 cars out of 212 were derailed, four of which were empty, and that the incident did not involve any hazardous chemicals. A Springfield fire department official said some of the train cars had liquid propane or ethanol, but they did not leak.

Local officials and the Ohio EPA reiterated that the incident did not release hazardous materials. The Ohio EPA director also said the agency would be "on-site ensuring that as cars are removed by Norfolk Southern that the soil is not impacted." The EPA received backlash from East Palestine residents for insisting that the first derailment does not pose a health threat.

Norfolk Southern said the two derailments are unrelated and "just bad luck." The latest incident comes as a bipartisan group of senators works on a bill to strengthen train safety procedures, and as the CEO of Norfolk Southern is scheduled to testify before Congress later this week.

Should states ban drag performances from areas where they can be seen by children?

578 votes, 91 comments

Context: Tennessee bans drag performances on public property or where they can be seen by children.

HIGHLIGHTED COMMENTS

No - Things my kids could see in public - people carrying guns, violent or sexual movie posters or billboards, pro-life protester signs with pictures of aborted fetuses, people smoking, women breastfeeding, people making out, homeless people. To me, these things are openings to discuss the world with them. [...] Our country was built on the notion of freedom, and our biggest challenge as a county moving forward will be to build a truly pluralistic democracy. This means tolerating things and ideas you don't agree with in the name of our liberal ideal.
