We don’t choose our gifts. They choose us.

A mark of maturity is surrendering to the person you actually are, instead of the one you wish you were. Most people never get such clarity, and they’re stunted for life.

Surrendering to your natural gifts is more painful than you’d think. You can’t really choose what you’re able to be excellent at because it depends on the hand that nature deals. That means you have to let go of the dreams that aren’t true to who you are. (Unfortunately, I’ll never become a professional golfer.) If you’re going to be world-class, you have to align yourself with your fingerprint.

In Write of Passage, we call this building your Personal Monopoly. Your Personal Monopoly is your unique intersection of skills, interests, and personality traits. Once you surrender to your nature you start writing what only you could write. And if you do that consistently, you’ll become a leading thinker on a topic and attract an audience to your ideas.

I suspect less than 10% of people ever surrender to their nature. They spend their whole lives trying to fulfill a fake and manufactured image. They get trapped in hollow careers and meaningless pursuits. They fall into being somebody they’re not. It’s the stuff of a cold and haunting misery.

Surrender is terrifying at first. It feels like the death of your dreams. But it’s actually the birth of something much more profound.
